But Wilson broke a bone in his left hand against Miami on February 10. Then, as he was working to return for the ACC regular-season finale, the 19-year-old broke his right thumb in practice. The Tar Heels fell to 19-5 on the season following the loss to Miami.

UNC didn’t completely fall apart without its star forward. However, the Tar Heels lost their final three contest. They fell to Clemson in the ACC quarterfinals (80-79) and VCU (82-78 in OT) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. They finished the season with a 24-9 record.

Wilson finished the 2025-26 season with 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds (2.6 offensive), and 2.7 assists. Wilson added 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks in 31 minutes while compiling shooting splits of 57.8/25.9/71.3. He posted 11 double-doubles and tallied 20 or more points 17 times.

Wilson earned several honors this past season: named the 2026 All-American second team, first-team all-ACC, and ACC All-Rookie selection. None of this success should be surprising.

Wilson entered Chapel Hill (NC) as a consensus top-5 2025 recruit out of Holy Innocents Episcopal School (Sandy Springs, Georgia), which is near his hometown of Atlanta. He projects to go anywhere from No. 3 to 7 in the draft, depending on who else enters the 2026 draft and which teams ultimately pick in those spots. Also, his performance at the NBA combine and individual workouts will go a long way toward determining his ultimate draft spot.

Wilson is a long, athletic two-way player who stands at 6-foot-10 with a 7-foot wingspan. He also moves like a deer and has an explosive vertical pop.

“Wilson’s combination of length, vertical athleticism, fluidity, and coordination put him in truly rare air among prospects all time,” Derek Parker of Sports Illustrated said in his evaluation.

Offensively, Wilson is a powerful straight-line driver with soft hands and is an excellent finisher at the rim — converting 72.3% of those attempts with 67 dunks — with the ability to absorb contact. He is at his best when he backs down his opponent, getting to shoulder-to-shoulder where he can use his toolbox: jump hooks, step-arounds, quick spins, floaters, and shot-jumpers.

Wilson, who averaged 1.6 points per shot with the Tar Heels, also thrives in the open court and getting to the foul line (7.5 attempts). Additionally, he is an outstanding cutter and offensive rebounder due to his quickness as a second jumper.

Wilson certainly has areas to work on on the offensive end. Wilson’s biggest areas for improvement are perimeter shooting, shot selection, and ball-handling. He made only 7 three-pointers this season on 27 attempts, which is just 9.2% of his shot attempts. Moreover, he struggles with shot selection, creating space, and settling for tough mid-range shots when crowded.

Wilson has the tools to be an elite defender in the NBA. His physical attributes will aid him considerably, as he can be a disruptor due to his physicality, length, and mobility. He can guard 1 through 4 and is an elite rim protector. He does have to work on his defensive technique, as he tends to get out of stance/completely standing up, and become aware of that area.

Strengths

Incredibly Productive (31.6 PER)

Plus-Length and elite athleticsm

Strong frame and plays with power

Possesses soft hands and a soft touch with excellent finishing ability

Excels in transition, who is a highly efficient scorer, especially when posting up

Getting to the free-throw line/drawing fouls

Strong passer and doesn’t make a lot of mistakes

Outstanding offensive rebounder (10.8%) and strong rebounder overall (22%)

Good Screener and cutter

Defensive versatility with the ability to wreak havoc due to physical capability

Weakness/ Area to Work On

His body: Increase weight and muscle

Footwork and Postmoves

Ballhandling

Shot-selection

Creating separation from dribble/ creating own shot

Playmaking out of the post

Shooting off screens

Defensive technique

Free throw shooting

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBmJy3rvpm" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/2001;" ></smartframe-embed>

Wilson’s NBA Projections (Individual and Team)

Player Comps: Jalen Johnson and Blake Griffin

Wilson has the potential to make an impact on the defensive end immediately, where he ends up in June’s draft.

Griffin is the best comparison to Wilson at this point, given their athleticism and power. Griffin was also an extremely good passer, superb rebounder (especially offensive), and physical defender. He didn’t become a viable 3-point threat until late in his career.

Granted, Griffin had a different body type than Wilson. But Wilson is a different kind of defender than Griffin, given his length and activity. Still, if Wilson can have anywhere near the NBA career that Griffin has, then he will be someone special to watch. Griffin, who last played in the NBA in 2023, was a six-time all-star and five-time All-NBA selection. He played 13 and averaged 19.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists with shooting splits of 49.3/32.8/65.6.

Now, while Griffin is the player Wilson resembles, it is Johnson who NBA teams would be ecstatic about turning into. Johnson and Wilson resemble each other physically and in terms of their two-way ability as well as in their respective positions. Griffin was a power forward/center, while Johnson is a combo forward.

It took Johnson, who was selected with the No. 20 pick in 2021 after one season at Kentucky, a while to develop into a polished NBA player — so teams may have to be patient with Wilson. However, injuries did slow his development. Johnson was selected to his first NBA All-Star Game this season, averaging 22.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 8.1 assists for the Atlanta Hawks.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOB6p1j44Cm" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/2001;" ></smartframe-embed>

Projected Teams and Best Fits

The NBA draft lottery is not held until May 10, 2026. But they’re unlikely to get much movement in terms of lottery position until then. The Indiana Pacers, Brooklyn Nets, and Washington Wizards are all battling for the worst record, with the Sacramento Kings fourth. The Utah Jazz have the fifth-worst record, with Dallas, Memphis, and New Orleans following. The Hawks own the Pelicans’ first-round selection due to the Derik Queen trade.

Let’s assume that the Pacers and the Wizards get the top two picks. Also, for this exercise, it is presumed that no team outside the top four moves up, as well as that AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, and Cameron Boozer enter the draft. For me, Dybantsa and Boozer are the best two NBA prospects. Peterson is definitely the best shooter of the three and one of the better ones in the draft, but there are lots of questions about him.

Brooklyn Nets

Brooklyn needs to continue adding talent, and the Nets have said they will try to compete starting next season. Still, he would fit nicely alongside Michael Porter Jr. and Nic Claxton at power forward. Or as a defensive stopper off the bench, depending on what the Nets do this summer.

Dallas Mavericks

Dallas needs some youngsters with athleticism here. Wilson and Cooper Flagg could be the faces of the franchise for years to come.

Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis is likely going through a rebuild, so the Mavs and Grizzlies could be the top two landing spots for Wilson outside the Pacers and Wizards.

As expected, Caleb Wilson‘s tenure at North Carolina was short-lived. Wilson declared for the 2026 NBA Draft on Friday evening after just one year with the Tar Heels, which was cut short by a broken hand.
