Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images

Charlotte’s Form

Over the last 15 games, Charlotte ranks second in offensive rating in the entire NBA. On top of that, they also hold the seventh-best defensive rating during that same stretch. They rank third in offensive rebounding and first in second-chance points. They also lead the NBA in free-throw accuracy during clutch time, which speaks volumes about their composure when games are on the line.

However, Charlotte’s 14.6 turnovers per game remain a concern. Against Miami, the Hornets stayed disciplined enough to run away with the game, but against a team that defends well, those turnovers can quickly become the difference. Turnovers aside, though, this Charlotte team looks increasingly sharp and dangerous. Their fourth quarter against Miami, which they won 40-18, proved they now have the composure to close games out. During their two-game skid early March, it was fourth-quarter collapses that cost them against Miami and Phoenix. The growth since then has been remarkable.

Orlando’s Inconsistency

The Orlando Magic have spent much of their season searching for consistency, and injuries have been the biggest reason why. Franz Wagner, one of their important players, has been sidelined for an extended period. Jonathan Isaac and Anthony Black are also out for Thursday’s game. Without Wagner in particular, Orlando lacks a true go-to creator who can manufacture offense in difficult moments.

Orlando ranks just 16th in offensive rating and 26th in three-point shooting percentage. Their overall field goal percentage sits at 21st in the league. The team leans heavily on Desmond Bane and Paolo Banchero to generate offense, and when those two are not firing, Orlando struggles to score. Furthermore, the Magic rank 16th in offensive rating, meaning they often rely on defense and pace to stay competitive rather than outscoring opponents.

Defensively, they are more respectable, sitting at 10th in the league, but that will only take them so far against a Charlotte offense that has been among the best in the NBA over the last month. Additionally, their point guard situation remains a real weakness. Jalen Suggs has been highly inconsistent all season and the Magic have struggled to get quality guard play on nightly basis. That is a problem against a team with LaMelo Ball running the show.

Key Matchup

Ball thrives when defenses cannot throw multiple capable wings at him, and on Thursday, the Magic simply will not have the personnel to bother him consistently. After his showing against Miami, LaMelo arrives at this game in the best form of his season.

Kon Knueppel is another name Orlando should fear. The ROTY frontrunner is averaging 19.3 points per game and has shown the ability to take over games with his three-point shooting. Similarly, Coby White was electric off the bench against Miami and gives Charlotte depth that Orlando simply cannot match on Thursday night.

Prediction

In this Hornets vs Magic matchup, the numbers, the form and the injury situation all point in one direction. Charlotte carries momentum, home court advantage, and superior firepower into this game. Orlando arrives shorthanded and with real questions about its ability to score consistently against a Hornets defense that has improved dramatically over the last month.

This clash should follow a similar pattern to Tuesday’s game against Miami: Charlotte in control early, the crowd locked in, and the Hornets pulling away in the second half.

Tip-off Time: Thursday, 7:00 p.m. EST, March 19th

Prediction: Charlotte Hornets -2.5

© Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

The Hornets vs Magic game on Thursday carries serious stakes for both sides.
