That may not be the case in 2026, and not simply because the top three prospects in the upcoming NBA Draft are <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/02\/13\/2026-nba-mock-draft-3-0-post-trade-deadline-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">all but set in stone<\/a>. Due to the league&#8217;s growing emphasis on the 3-ball and ball-movement, Yessoufou&#8217;s throwback game doesn&#8217;t have the appeal it otherwise would have had. However, with a skill set reminiscent of Los Angeles Lakers legend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bryanko01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kobe Bryant<\/a>, he looks like he&#8217;ll be one of the draft&#8217;s most impactful players.<\/p>\n<h2>2026 NBA Draft Profile: Tounde Yessoufou, Baylor<\/h2>\n<p>After graduating from St. Joseph High School as <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/xballafrica\/status\/1888901825102750181?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California&#8217;s all-time leading scorer<\/a>, Yessoufou kept his foot on the gas in Texas.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3>The Numbers<\/h3>\n<p>Despite his heavy diet of tough jumpers, the 19-year-old&#8217;s fit frame and tender touch have allowed him to average 18.0 points per game for the Bears on .473-.315-.752 shooting splits this season. Of course, Bryant never went to college, so an exact parallel can&#8217;t be made. However, Yessoufou&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/04\/15\/baylor-tounde-yessoufou-path-nba-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">mainstream comparison is<\/a> to Minnesota Timberwolves star wing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/anthony-edwards-2.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Edwards<\/a>, a one-and-done at Georgia. To be fair, Peterson&#8217;s seemingly been hampered by a hamstring injury this season. All the same, he&#8217;s a projected top-three pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Yessoufou&#8217;s offensive box plus-minus (4.7) exceeds that of UConn Huskies freshman wing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/braylon-mullins-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Braylon Mullins<\/a> (3.6), a 3-point specialist who&#8217;ll likely be invited to the NBA Draft&#8217;s green room.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3>Strengths<\/h3>\n<p>Yessoufou&#8217;s advanced numbers may come as a surprise to those who preach the 3-point gospel. After all, it&#8217;s the Beninese ball-handler&#8217;s most glaring weakness.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, his efficiency and versatility inside the arc &#8211;scoring not just off-the-dribble but off-ball &#8211;it helps him overcome that deficiency. Furthermore, though he isn&#8217;t getting treated like a Splash Brother, defenders won&#8217;t play too far off of him. With his first step, physicality and overall athleticism, he can blow-by his man and finish at the rim even when given space. To that point, he also has a knack for getting around defenders with a eurostep. His assist numbers don&#8217;t speak highly of his ability to distribute the rock, but he&#8217;s also a capable playmaker. Most times, he&#8217;ll make the simple but necessary pass. Other times, he flashes the type of precision and prescience that separates the cream from the crop.<\/p>\n<p>With a heart that&#8217;s bigger than his listed size (6-foot-5, 215 pounds), his tendency to pull down offensive rebounds is just a plus. Keeping possessions alive and scoring second-chance points are winning plays. Even if they don&#8217;t make a highlight reel, they inherently help his team emerge victorious at the final buzzer.<\/p>\n<p>Defensively, Yessoufou is truly special. When he&#8217;s guarding man-to-man, he takes away space like a black hole, his agility and strength standing out. Obviously, he won&#8217;t stop every player every time down the court. Nevertheless, he excels at keeping his body between his defensive assignment and the basket. That alone makes him a true two-way prospect heading into the draft. Factoring in his pickpocket and shot-blocker badges, it&#8217;s going to be difficult to keep him off the court.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h3>Weaknesses<\/h3>\n<p>Yessoufou is mediocre from long distance, which could make him an offensive liability. That isn&#8217;t to say that being accurate from that range is necessary for a player to have success. However, every inch matters in the NBA. If defenses clog the paint to stop them on the drive or cheat off them to provide help on a better outside threat, points may not stream as freely.<\/p>\n<p>The ideal way to counteract that would be to surround Yessoufou with at least three average-to-great 3-point shooters but that isn&#8217;t always possible. Furthermore, those lineups work best with an athletic slasher that can spray the ball around. As previously mentioned, Yessoufou is a better passer than given credit for. If the league undergoes another revolution, perhaps that will change.
