The prevailing narrative<\/a> over the last two and a half decades of NBA history is that the Western Conference<\/a> has always been more competitive than its Eastern<\/a> counterpart.<\/p>\n

This statement can be interpreted as having some truth to it. The West is home to the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a>. Other teams, such as the San Antonio Spurs<\/a> and Minnesota Timberwolves<\/a>, are sure to set the stage for what will be a competitive Western Conference playoffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other squads that can make some playoff buzz, too. Those teams include the Houston Rockets<\/a>, the Luka\u00a0<\/a>Doncic-<\/a>led<\/span>\u00a0Los Angeles Lakers<\/a>, and the Denver Nuggets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The teams in the East, however, are a different beast. The Detroit Pistons<\/a> look better than ever as the first seed. The reinvigorated Boston Celtics<\/a> recently added Jayson Tatum<\/a> and are neck-and-neck with Detroit. Plus, neither the New York\u00a0<\/a>Knicks\u00a0<\/a>nor<\/span>\u00a0the Cleveland\u00a0Cavaliers<\/a> looks ready to give up any time soon.<\/p>\n

What about the rest of the Eastern Conference? Who will come out on top?<\/p>\n

Motor City Madness<\/h3>\n

The Pistons have played a brand of basketball that removes any doubt as to whether they deserve to be the first seed. Cade Cunningham<\/a>‘s stellar play has really influenced Detroit’s offense. The Pistons’ front-court of Jalen Duren<\/a> and Isaiah Stewart<\/a> has been physical throughout the year. Javonte Green<\/a>‘s energy and hustle off the bench are huge for a team such as the Pistons.<\/p>\n

Reputed sources<\/a> list Detroit as a top-tier contender, and they are living up to the name. Currently on a three-game winning streak, and the Celtics being five games away, the first seed appears to be secure in Motor City.<\/p>\n

Banner 19?<\/h3>\n

Likely energized by Tatum and his Kobe Bryant<\/a>-esque return, the Celtics are now 3-2 since the six-time All-Star<\/a>‘s return. A lot of credit for Boston’s success goes to Jaylen Brown<\/a>, who leads the team in scoring this season. Neemias Queta<\/a> has proved himself as a reliable starting center, averaging 10 points a game, adding to his 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. Derrick White<\/a> and Payton Pritchard<\/a> are two other players who have had a massive offensive impact on this Celtics team, with both of them being top three in points and assists per game, alongside Brown, this season. <\/span><\/p>\n

Tatum had his own qualms<\/a> about how returning to the team this late into the season could affect the offense, which is firmly centered around Brown. However, Tatum’s return will have a key role to play, particularly as the Celtics enter a pivotal<\/a> stretch of the season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Big Apple And The Land<\/h3>\n

Despite their consistent ball movement and isolation scoring in Jalen Brunson<\/a>, the Knicks have lost several games to teams that are obviously below their caliber. These included losses earlier this season to teams such as the NBA’s worst team, the Indiana Pacers<\/a>. Other such losses came against the 12th seed Dallas Mavericks<\/a>, the 9th seed Golden State Warriors<\/a>, and the 15th\u00a0seed Sacramento<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Kings<\/a>. Brunson is not the only player who makes their impact known on offense. Karl-Anthony Towns<\/a>‘ impact on the team overall has lessened. In particular, head coach Mike Brown has played the stretch big man noticeably less than former head coach Tom Thibodeau. This has led to an overall decrease in his numbers across the board.<\/p>\n

Just as the Knicks have, the Cavaliers have also lost to teams that are not near contention. Those losses include the Mavericks, Utah Jazz<\/a>, and Milwaukee Bucks<\/a>. Despite a recent injury to his right thumb, James Harden doesn’t appear to be showing any signs of slowing down. He is continuing to average solid numbers for the Cavs. In the post-season, Cleveland will likely heavily rely on Donovan Mitchell<\/a>‘s isolation scoring. They will also lean on their interior defense to block easy points at the basket. Injuries have been a key factor that has affected the Cavaliers throughout their past two postseasons. In particular, injuries affected pivotal players such as Mitchell and Darius Garland<\/a>, who dealt with various toe injuries. Evan Mobley<\/a> had knee problems, and Max Strus<\/a> recently made his debut after missing 67 games due to a left foot injury.<\/p>\n

Winner Take All<\/h3>\n

At the beginning of the season, the prevailing narrative surrounding the NBA and the Eastern Conference was that it was wide open. After all, Tyrese Haliburton<\/a> would be out for the year after tearing his Achilles tendon in the NBA Finals. Tatum was expected not to play this season either. Nobody could have predicted the Pistons and their comeback to the top.<\/p>\n

Indeed, the race is tight. All teams seeded 1st through 10th in the East are within 4 games of each other. The Heat, Orlando Magic<\/a>, Toronto Raptors<\/a>, and the Charlotte Hornets<\/a> have their postseason aspirations. For any team, regardless of their playoff pedigree, one loss could be all it takes to fall in this competitive playoff landscape.<\/p>\n
