If so, they were witnesses to a riveting heavyweight battle between the UConn Huskies and the Michigan Wolverines, the latter coming out on top largely due to the performance of Michigan junior transfer Elliot Cadeau. For Houston freshman point guard Kingston Flemings, seeing Cadeau lead his team to a title may have been a layered experience.

On the one hand, Flemings is an impassioned player who not only cares about winning but his team. To that point, the mere fact that the Wolverines were the ones cutting down the nets rather than the Cougars was already going to sting. Adding insult to injury is the fact that Flemings has been a higher rated prospect than Cadeau throughout the season. If Cadeau could slice and dice his way through the Huskies defense, imagine what he could do.

2026 NBA Draft Profile: Kingston Flemings, Houston

Let’s start with Flemings’ numbers, just to get a feel for his production.

The Numbers

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, Flemings finished the 2025-26 season averaging 16.1 points, 5.2 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. So far as his efficiency, he converted 47.6% of his field goal attempts (12.6/game) and 38.7% of his 3-point attempts (2.9/game), along with 84.5% of his free-throw attempts (3.5/game). In terms of ball control (another aspect of efficiency), he posted a respectable 2.91 assist-to-turnover ratio.

His advanced numbers are arguably just as impressive. Flemings recorded .225 win shares per 48 minutes, a conference-leading 6.6 win shares (3.8 offensive, 2.8 defensive) and a 12.6 box plus-minus (6.6 offensive, 6.0 defensive). His offensive rating (123.3) and defensive rating (96.9) also reflect his balanced impact.

It shouldn’t be any surprise Flemings was not only named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team, but the All-Big 12 1st Team. He’s one of six freshmen to be selected as a Consensus All-American, joining AJ Dybantsa (BYU), Cameron Boozer (Duke), Caleb Wilson (UNC), Darius Acuff Jr. (Arkansas) and Keaton Wagler (Illinois). Each of the aforementioned players is projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.

Offense

Offensively, Flemings has the potential to be one of the best scorers at the next level.

Houston Kingston Flemings pic.twitter.com/P2IiFTaRUD

— Pitless (@pitlessball) March 27, 2026

At the point guard position especially, his length and quick-twitch athleticism will naturally give him the upper-hand in many matchups. Factor in his crafty ball-handling ability and he’s a player that should truly thrive in NBA space. In fact, he may have an easier time scoring in the NBA than the NCAA despite facing a higher level of competition.

Flemings may also be enabled to score more as well. With that in mind, Houston head coach Kelvin Sampson has earned his status as a college legend. Nevertheless, the Cougars’ offense has usually been middling during his tenure.

True 3-Level Scorer

In this era, many would likely want him to take more shots from beyond the arc. Nevertheless, he’s a true three-level scorer in a league that at least claims to appreciate that archetype. As a long-range threat, he’s not only consistent but has range out to the hash mark. In the midrange, he can be absolutely lethal due to his touch and his ability to create space with his handles or footwork. As a finisher, he’s not as effective as his skill and tools would suggest because he takes a number of tough shots. Nevertheless, he’ll convert by going under the tin or over the top, and make a highlight doing it.

You Can’t Unsee His Vision

Because of how threatening he is as a scorer, his natural playmaking ability is only enhanced. His court vision and passing precision are already advanced as is. With defenders having no choice but to account for his ability to score from anywhere on the court though, all his teammates need to do is find a crease in the defense. Flemings will find them.

Defense

At the defensive end, Flemings has been more impressive than any of the highly-touted freshman point guards.

Kingston Flemings is a very well-rounded prospect…

Rarely turns the ball over on O and generates TONS of turnovers on D. Hard-nosed PG with a 6’9 wingspan. Solid playmaking instincts and a mature in-between game. Rim + 3-Ball will determine his ceiling. pic.twitter.com/oRXAdiAgWp https://t.co/COdI2El7ad

— Basketball University (@UofBasketball) April 2, 2026

Because of his length, short-area burst and lateral agility, he’s not a physical liability at the point-of-attack. However, as many have said and will continue to point out, defensive efficacy is about more than athletic tools. A large –perhaps even the more significant –part of playing effective defense is effort.

Keeping that in mind, Flemings doesn’t just display the will to excel at that end. He also clearly pays attention to the scouting report and understands the value in following it. He seemingly also set a standard for himself defensively as well – a rarity nowadays. Thus, Flemings demonstrates three key defensive traits: enthusiasm, education and expectation.

At the NBA level, he may not be considered a lockdown defender just because the guard talent is that good. All the same, it’s unlikely that his coaches will have to worry about him being targeted. Compared to most other NBA points guards, that separates him in and of itself.

© Thomas Shea-Imagn Images

Since being eliminated by the Illinois Fighting Illini on March 26, the Houston Cougars have likely been at home, watching the rest of the NCAA Tournament unfold like everybody else.
