Many fans and critics were expecting Oklahoma City to drop the game and go down easily. Instead, it turned out to be one of the most interesting matchups for the season so far. While the Pistons won in the end, it was the Thunder’s backups that took over the spotlight.

This isn’t something new for OKC fans. Over the course of the season, the ability to continue winning without the main guys has been the identity of the Thunder. Detroit won and now has the best record in the NBA. But the bigger picture here is that they needed a mighty performance to shrug off the Thunder’s B-squad. This is a unique sight in the NBA, especially with your top stars out. In fact, it says a lot about Oklahoma City being a competitive squad even without Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren, and Isaiah Hartenstein.

Is Thunder vs. Pistons an NBA Finals preview? 🤔

The NBA Countdown panel discusses the emergence of Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons 📈 pic.twitter.com/AKt8vcRHwT

— NBA on ESPN (@ESPNNBA) February 26, 2026

Jaylin Williams’ Career Night Was Long Due

Jaylin Williams is one of the best backup bigs for the Thunder. In the previous season, he’s been enduring the same type of games without the OKC big three. But in three of those games, J-Will was posting Nikola Jokic-esque performances with a triple-double and leading the team to victories. Had it not been for his grit, Branden Carlson would have been the only big man left for OKC for the rest of the game.

Instead, we saw why the Thunder have decided to keep him over Ousmane Dieng, who was gone by the Trade Deadline. He’s playing more minutes, coming up with more highlights than expected. With both SGA and Ajay Mitchell missing some key time, Wallace is definitely stepping up. We saw him elevate his playmaking, as evidenced by his superb game against Cleveland. He also had an all-around game against the Raptors.

Cason Wallace hitting between the legs snatch-backs & pulling up for 3.

this is special stuff.pic.twitter.com/V8wK8gSk1g

— Thunder Film Room (@ThunderFilmRoom) February 25, 2026

So for Wallace to deliver yet another impressive outing in the Thunder vs Pistons clash, that’s a big win for OKC. The Kentucky guard is showing his worth as a reliable playmaker in his own right. The way he plays even mirrors both SGA’s impressive shot-making and J-Dub’s ability in playing through contact. At this point, one can expect that Wallace will continue to improve his skills. This is the time for him to shine, and he’s making the most of it.

The Thunder Grit is Showing

Rough, swarming defense, selfless offense; this is the brand of Thunder basketball that everyone knows. But what really shines is that they are not giving up on games easily. In fact, OKC is fighting down to the last possession. The fact that the best team in the East had to find ways to close out the Thunder’s reserves is definitely quite the feat.

It’s been a hot start coming off the All-Star Break. The OKC bench deserves a lot of credit for their impressive performances. Being able to thrive and shine without the key players of the championship core says a lot about the talent in this squad.
