DALLAS \u2014 The Dallas Mavericks<\/a> announced on Wednesday that Kyrie Irving<\/a> will not return this season. Irving suffered a torn ACL in his left knee on March 3 against Sacramento. With his return pushed to next season, the Mavericks must now reassess their direction, and as many as three veterans could be on their way out as a result.<\/p>\n

Irving suffered the injury after stepping on Jonas Valan\u010di\u016bnas<\/a>\u2019 foot. He stayed in the game to shoot free throws. Teammates then helped him to the back of the American Airlines Center.<\/p>\n

The Mavericks made the decision to shut Irving down for the season. The move protects their long-term outlook. This signals that Dallas will not chase competitiveness this season. They traded Anthony Davis<\/a> to the Washington Wizards<\/a> for salary relief and draft capital. Irving and Davis played only 25 minutes together in Dallas. The Mavericks control their first-round pick this year. However, they do not control another until 2031.<\/p>\n

Does Khris Middleton Fit a Rebuilding Mavericks Team?<\/h3>\n

Khris Middleton<\/a> arrived as part of the Mavericks’ pivot. He no longer plays as a two-way force at an All-Star level. He averages over 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists.<\/p>\n

Dallas continues to get younger. Middleton does not fit that direction. He will likely seek a contender in free agency. The Mavericks have little incentive to retain him.<\/p>\n

Is Tyus Jones Part of the Mavericks\u2019 Future Plans?<\/h3>\n

Tyus Jones<\/a> built his reputation on ball security and playmaking. His offensive output has declined in recent seasons. He struggled to earn minutes in Orlando earlier this year. He averaged just 16 minutes per game.<\/p>\n

Dallas later acquired him after he was salary dumped to Charlotte. He has produced modest numbers in limited action. Also, Dallas acquired an intriguing guard prospect in AJ Johnson<\/a> and Jones will take away from his development with Kyrie\u2019s return next season. Therefore Tyus Jones will enter free agency this summer and the Mavericks will likely move in a different direction.<\/p>\n
