As an East front office member <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.ph\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/47949695\/why-los-angeles-lakers-quiet-nba-trade-deadline-explosive-offseason-lebron-james-luka-doncic-giannis-antetkounmpo\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told McMenamin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, LA will \u201cneed to get as many defenders with length that can knock down a shot as possible.&#8221; McMenamin then brought up several players that fit the bill, including three who have been considered within the organization: unrestricted free agent <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wiggian01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andrew Wiggins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and restricted wings <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/watsope01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peyton Watson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/easonta01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tari Eason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAn unrestricted free agent who has been discussed internally, sources told ESPN, is Andrew Wiggins, but he has a player option with Miami he could exercise. The 30-year-old has averaged 15.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists on .471\/.395\/.767 splits, while chipping in 1.2 steals and 1.0 block defensively. Waiting for him in free agency seems like a far better move in hindsight after previous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/07\/14\/lakers-no-longer-interested-andrew-wiggins-trade\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discussions between the Lakers and Heat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fell through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wiggins has already proven he can thrive on a winning team as the second, third or even fourth option, and he\u2019s made meaningful contributions despite Miami\u2019s middling record (29-27, 8th in East). Although he\u2019d be a worthy get for the Lakers to relieve pressure off of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the team must convince him to take a decent pay cut, below the $30 million player option he could decline to enter free agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Tari Eason<\/h4>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/easonta01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tari Eason<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has battled ankle and knee injuries this season, but they have not stopped his efficient play for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/02\/08\/what-the-rockets-win-vs-the-thunder-says-about-their-offense\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston Rockets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 31 games (17 starts), he has averaged 12.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals while shooting 45% from the field and 46% from deep. The 6\u20198\u201d wing boasts a 7\u20192\u201d wingspan that\u2019s helped him guard multiple positions, versatility the Lakers certainly need up front.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Houston\u2019s rising stars at 24 years old, it would be difficult for the Lakers to pry him away regardless of how the Rockets\u2019 season goes, given Houston\u2019s right to match any offer sheet and the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6894997\/2026\/01\/28\/nba-offseason-salary-cap-space-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complicated financial situation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they\u2019ll face. Still, Eason is worth a shot for his potential on both sides of the ball and fit within the Lakers\u2019 timeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Peyton Watson<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet another rising star who\u2019s taken the league by storm, Watson has emerged as a hot commodity this summer, quickly developing into a young talent for the injury-riddled Denver Nuggets. Across 49 games (39 starts), the 23-year-old has put up 14.9 points on nearly 50% shooting (41% from deep), while adding 4.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.2 blocks per game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheHoopCentral\/status\/2018155514824380426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-flyer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> burst onto the scene in the wake of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jokicni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nikola Jokic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/01\/20\/peyton-watson-has-more-than-earned-his-big-payday\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">left knee injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in January, proving he could carry an increased workload while the three-time MVP was out. Watson barely lost his step after Jokic returned on Jan. 30, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask\/peyton-watson-stats-since-january-30-2026\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">averaging 19.3 points<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his last four games before going down with a hamstring injury. Still, his stellar production has caught the attention of rival contenders, with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2026\/01\/28\/lakers-hometown-hero-peyton-watson-free-agency\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lakers already preparing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be a part of that chase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Los Angeles-area native and former UCLA Bruin, Lakers fans would surely embrace Watson in the purple and gold.
