He netted a triple-double in the win with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists. It came against the best defensive team in the league. He assisted on 4 triples in the first quarter alone (7 of his 11 assists were on three-pointers). He even personally contributed to the Rockets’ 43 attempts from three, going 1-of-1 from distance. The team averages just 30.6 attempts per game (second lowest in the league).

Unfortunately, there is one seemingly obvious explanation for the Rockets’ comparatively high three-point volume on Saturday night. The team was playing without All-Defensive star Amen Thompson, who was absent due to illness. Thompson attempts just 1.7 threes per game and is converting on only 20% of them. His unwillingness and inability to shoot have occasionally proven a major problem for the Rockets’ offense.

The Rockets’ Replacements vs. Thunder

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/2026/02/USATSI_28182762_168402037_lowres-1024x683.jpg" alt="Feb 7, 2026; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA; Houston Rockets Head Coach Ime Udoka talks to Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant (7) and guard Reed Sheppard (15) during the second half at Paycom Center. Mandatory Credit: Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

In Thompson’s place, the Rockets started a backcourt of Reed Sheppard and Tari Eason. The two combined for 17 three-point attempts. In theory, the Rockets would have liked for most of those attempts to come from Sheppard. Sheppard is shooting 37.8% and is an established sharpshooter at this point. However, as such, teams guard him to take away the three. So, instead, the lion’s share was from the lion-hearted Eason.

Eason went 5-of-13 in the contest (38.5%) and is actually at a staggering 47.8% for the season. Obviously, nobody would expect Eason to sustain that percentage, but Eason’s three-point shooting leap this season (34.5% across three previous seasons) looks like it could be real. He’s attempting 4.7 threes a game and shoots with boundless confidence. A caveat is that Eason’s free-throw percentage remains in the doldrums at 62.5%. He takes so few free throws, though (1.1 per game), that it’s hard to put much stock in the number. The much bigger issue is that injuries have held him to just 29 of 51 possible games.

When Eason has been available this season, he’s been almost the perfect player for the Rockets. He’s a legitimate floor spacer who also preserves Houston’s identity as an offensive rebounding juggernaut. Eason pulled down two vital offensive rebounds for the Rockets in crunch time versus the Thunder, resulting in a putback and free throws. But the Rockets can’t view someone like Jabari Smith Jr. as expendable as long as Eason remains a coin flip to suit up each night.

The Reality of Three-Point Attempts

The Rockets’ 43 three-point attempts on Saturday night were only their third-highest this season. Both higher attempt totals came against the same team: the Portland Trail Blazers, once in January, then in November. Thompson started both of those games. Also, Portland, on average, actually allows fewer three-point attempts per game than the Thunder. But Sheppard was allowed to bomb away from three in both games off the bench. Smith also took a combined 19 attempts (though he only made four).

The point is that high three-point attempt totals should theoretically be the product of circumstance rather than something to be artificially forced. If the opposing team is leaving you open looks from there, you take them. If not, you attack the extended defense for looks inside. But the Rockets’ problems start when they ignore open looks outside to attack a heavily defended interior. That happens because the personnel the front office and coaching staff put on the perimeter aren’t up to the task.

The Rockets only shot 34.9% from three against the Thunder. That percentage was helped by third-string guard JD Davison in only his 24th game this season. He went 2-of-4 from distance and was a +16 in 18 minutes. It was dragged down by rotation regulars Dorian Finney-Smith and Josh Okogie, who combined for 1-of-9.

Rockets head coach Ime Udoka only has so much to work with. Davison probably isn’t a rotation-level NBA guard. Eason is only occasionally available. But there’s also little doubt that the roster was constructed the way it was to appease Udoka’s defense-first preferences. The team can try to replicate its formula versus the Thunder, but the results may vary. The team isn’t constructed to shoot the ball. In the modern NBA, that’s basically shooting yourself in the foot.

© Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

The Houston Rockets defeated the one-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night, 112-106.
