The Blazers must find a way to fix their struggles.

The Biggest Problems Behind The Trail Blazers’ Struggles

From early to mid-January, the Portland Trail Blazers were on a hot streak. They even surpassed the .500 win percentage with a 23-22 record. Unfortunately, the Blazers have fallen into a bad skid with a six-game losing streak.

While Shaedon Sharpe has put up decent numbers during this stretch, the rest of the team is struggling. Jrue Holiday and Jerami Grant have struggled since returning from their respective injuries. Players like Donovan Clingan and Toumani Camara have not been as efficient as the fans would like.

It is the Blazers’ worst stretch of the 2025-26 season. They want to resolve it, but they have plenty of problems to resolve if they want to bounce back.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQTQY9jO1k" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3900px; aspect-ratio: 3900/2700;" ></smartframe-embed>

Avdija’s Absence Makes It Worse For Portland

Avdija has been dealing with a lower back injury over the past few weeks. Considering he just earned an All-Star nod for the first time in his career, the Blazers need him.

Acting head coach Tiago Splitter’s system uses Avdija as the focal point. The Blazers’ offense often relies on drive-and-kick plays, which Avdija thrives on. Sharpe can do the same, but he lacks the physical strength that can help him bully his matchups.

DENI AVDIJA. Avdija’s absence has led to the lack of dynamism in Portland’s offense. Most people know that one of Holiday, Grant, and Sharpe will initiate the play.

They are the only players who can generate shots, which is a red flag for the Blazers. This has been more exposed without Avdija, who covered up a lot of the Blazers’ holes with his standout play. Of course, when Avdija did play in recent games, it was clear that his injury was bothering him.

The Blazers’ Struggles Are Apparent On Both Ends

Feb 3, 2026; Portland, Oregon, USA; Portland Trail Blazers forward Toumani Camara (33) dunks the ball over Phoenix Suns guard/forward Dillon Brooks (3) during the first half at Moda Center. Mandatory Credit: Jaime Valdez-Imagn Images

Before the 2025-26 season started, most people associated the Blazers with good defense. Under Chauncey Billups, he instilled a defensive culture spearheaded by Toumani Camara.

They have continued to play hard on that end of the floor with Camara, Donovan Clingan, and Sidy Cissoko. Unfortunately, they have also been struggling recently. Teams have figured out that the Blazers are playing a drop scheme on defense.

This means they are exposing Clingan’s lack of presence at the perimeter with pick-and-rolls. It was most evident during the Blazers’ loss to the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday. Collin Gillespie was dominant with his perimeter shooting and playmaking.

Collin Gillespie was swishin' and dishin' in PHX's W!

☀️ 30 PTS (career-high)
☀️ 10 AST
☀️ 8 3PM (ties career-high)
☀️ 3 STL

He's just the fifth player in @Suns franchise history to total 30+ PTS, 10+ AST and 5+ 3PM in a game! pic.twitter.com/nN8a5BOLEw

— NBA (@NBA) February 4, 2026

With the Blazers’ struggles happening on both ends of the floor, they need a solution. It would be best if they could return to playing with more energy, as they often look lethargic. Blake Wesley‘s return as a spark plug can resolve this, and the same goes for a returning Scoot Henderson.

Sharpe is guilty of playing with less energy. He is arguably the Blazers’ most talented player, but he can be too passive at times. When he is aggressive, the Blazers are a much better team because he opens a lot of possibilities.

Splitter’s System Still Lacks The Needed Sharpness

Splitter has done well to lead this team on short notice. However, he has been with the Blazers for 50 games now, so he should know their issues. The rotations are still questionable, especially with Sharpe’s minutes being inconsistent.

Of course, the Blazers have dealt with the most injuries in the NBA. However, Splitter should find solutions to their problems through his coaching. The offense can improve with more ball movement and smart play calls. Going away from the drop defensive scheme can also massively help the team.

Splitter and his staff must be sharper with their decision-making. The Blazers have tons of potential, but they are not getting the most out of their players. Even without Avdija, this Blazers team is good; they just need the right guidance. If Splitter can step up, the Blazers’ struggles can be a thing of the past.
Featured Image: Brad Penner-Imagn Images

The Portland Trail Blazers have lost six consecutive games, erasing their progress from a promising January.
