He also has an excellent eye for outlet passes and frequently feeds hustling players in transition. While he can bang through the paint and drive, anything can happen. He can score a strong and-one layup, he can lose the ball, or hook his arm for an offensive foul.

Under Brown, he’s doing more off-ball motions and is expected to read the floor before going into scoring mode. Jalen Brunson is the first option. Having Towns hustle on offense and in transition has proven difficult, and a winded player is more likely to pick up incidental fouls.

Towns has no games with more than two blocks this season, and he’s 66th in the league with 28 blocks. Out of the top five players in fouls this season, the 6’7” Toumani Camara (156 fouls) is the only one to match this. Okongwu has five games with 3+ blocks, Jackson Jr. has 11 games with 3+ blocks (and 4 games with 5+ blocks), and Wendell Carter Jr. (154 fouls) has two games with 3+ blocks.

The Mental Game

KAT has been known to lose focus and petition officials, asking for shooting fouls on his drives. Many players do this, but it sometimes leads to poor transition defense. He also finds himself arguing his own defensive fouls, which pile up when the opposing coach knows to run at him.

Getting him started early is important. Clyde Frazier mentioned it in the pregame against Sacramento on January 28th. Calling it “KAT-apult”, Frazier emphasized the need to get KAT started early on offense. Hitting an early three is a confidence boost and can lessen the overall pressure to perform in other areas.

All facets of the game amplify in the playoffs, and the mental game is no exception. For the remainder of the season, eyes will be on Towns in matchups against top teams like the Pistons, Celtics, and Nuggets.

© Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images

After 43 games, Karl-Anthony Towns leads the league in offensive fouls with 43.
