Both are seeing expanded roles as the Jayhawks look for their first road victory in Big 12 conference play.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Kansas Guards Step Into Expanded Roles in Big 12 Play<\/h2>\n<h3><b>Jackson\u2019s Steal Total Ranks Among the Big 12\u2019s Best<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the attention this season has centered around <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/darryn-peterson-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darryn Peterson<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/players\/flory-bidunga-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flory Bidunga<\/a>, but far less light has been shed on Elmarko Jackson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this season, Jackson recorded five steals and two assists against TCU, then followed it up a week later with four steals and two more assists against then\u2013No. 2 Iowa State, including one that led to a highlight lob to Bidunga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the 84-63 win over Iowa State, head coach Bill Self called Jackson\u2019s steal \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W2WvKRgdEKk\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the best play anybody\u2019s made this year<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/game\/_\/gameId\/401831215\/kansas-tennessee\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Against Tennessee<\/a>, he scored a career-high 17 points in 27 minutes, shooting 57% from the floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through three seasons with the Jayhawks (including one redshirt year), the sophomore has consistently hovered around five points per game while adding roughly two assists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference this season? He\u2019s started just one contest. His production off the bench mirrors the numbers he posted two seasons ago when he was in the starting lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>McDowell Showing Consistency Despite Limited Minutes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Jackson, Jamari McDowell has played a limited number of minutes this season after redshirting all of last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Against Iowa State, he recorded six assists and one block, while remaining consistent on the glass, totaling two or more rebounds in each of the last three contests. McDowell maintains a positive assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.5, proving careful decision-making as his minutes increase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sophomore, however, has yet to deliver a breakout performance. He\u2019s scored in double figures only twice this season. In 34 minutes against Syracuse&#8212;<a  href=\"https:\/\/www2.kusports.com\/sports\/college\/basketball-men\/2025\/nov\/25\/mcdowell-fits-in-well-in-first-career-start\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">McDowell&#8217;s first career start<\/a>&#8212;he finished with <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/boxscore\/_\/gameId\/401817482\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nine points on 3-of-7 shooting<\/a>, adding four assists with only one turnover. His shooting percentage on the season hovers right around 40%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBYZS6HbTZ\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3600px; aspect-ratio: 3600\/2570;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p>On the glass, McDowell has posted two or more rebounds in each of the Jayhawks&#8217; last three games: two against West Virginia, two against Iowa State and three in Friday&#8217;s win over Baylor. He&#8217;s one of only six players on the active roster averaging right around two or more assists per game.<\/p>\n<p>McDowell has started just five games for Kansas this season, but his three-point shooting is up from around 30% last season to over 44% in 18 games through Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus far, McDowell&#8217;s impact has come in brief spurts, though increased minutes in conference play could provide an opportunity to prove his playmaking ability down the stretch.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Up Next: Looking ahead to Colorado<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Jayhawks head to Boulder for the fifth matchup of conference play against the <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mens-college-basketball\/game\/_\/gameId\/401827633\/kansas-colorado\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Buffaloes<\/a>. <\/span>A win for Kansas would mark their first road win since Dec. 13 against NC State, and the fourth straight win over the Buffaloes dating back to 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Kansas head coach Bill Self will miss tonight\u2019s game due to medical complications.
