{"id":170288,"date":"2025-12-19T13:36:56","date_gmt":"2025-12-19T18:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=170288"},"modified":"2025-12-19T13:36:56","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T18:36:56","slug":"insider-deandre-hunter-viable-backup-plan-lakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/12\/19\/insider-deandre-hunter-viable-backup-plan-lakers\/","title":{"rendered":"Insider: East Wing Could Be &#8216;Viable Backup Plan&#8217; for Lakers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 list of potential trade targets continues to grow, with a recent report linking them to a familiar face.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Insider: East Wing Could Be &#8216;Viable Backup Plan&#8217; for Lakers<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Former Top-5 Pick Worth Monitoring for LA<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a Thursday night post on X, Forbes NBA insider Evan Sidery <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/esidery\/status\/2001835158434099307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Cleveland Cavaliers forward De\u2019Andre Hunter is a \u201ctrade target to monitor\u201d for the Lakers, presumably if a pursuit of New Orleans Pelicans wing <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/joneshe01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herb Jones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> falls through.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs the Cavaliers explore the idea of significantly tweaking their roster, Hunter becomes a coveted commodity during trade season,\u201d he added. \u201cLos Angeles is pursuing Herb Jones, but Hunter could become the viable backup plan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter was drafted fourth by the Lakers in 2019 with the pick that became part of the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> blockbuster. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/report-hawks-pelicans-trade-no-4-pick\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pelicans moved Hunter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Atlanta Hawks on draft night for picks 8, 17, and 35.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 28-year-old wing has been an efficient contributor through his seven years in the league, averaging 14.8 points on 45% shooting from the field while shifting between starter and sixth man. In 24 games for Cleveland so far, Hunter has averaged 15.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting 43% from the field, 30% from three and 85% from the free-throw line. Mandatory Credit: David Richard-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>Lakers May Not Gain Much with Hunter<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite steady production throughout his career, Hunter has struggled as of late, with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DevaronPerry\/status\/2000589427567939795\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poor shooting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/kingjamesgospel.com\/cavaliers-learning-harsh-deandre-hunter-lesson-shouldve-known-all-along\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of defense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serving as sticking points in recent games and leading to his appearance in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/fadeawayworld.net\/nba-trade-rumors\/cleveland-cavaliers\/cavaliers-players-likely-traded\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade rumors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cavs fans and writers have called for Hunter to be benched\u2014which <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/cavaliers\/onsi\/news\/what-benching-de-andre-hunter-means-for-cleveland-cavaliers-going-forward-01kcrz5htnrv\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">happened for the first time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wednesday night\u2014while <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OffTheGlasNBA\/status\/2001838282326339623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some Laker fans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hope the front office avoids him at all costs. Although the writing could be on the wall for Hunter\u2019s time in Cleveland, it doesn\u2019t appear that going west will solve his (or the Lakers\u2019) problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers remain clearly in need of consistent wing defenders, and Hunter, who has a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=de%27andre+hunter+defensive+rating+this+season+with+rank\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defensive rating of 117<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this season, does little to mitigate the issue. If defensive shortcomings weren\u2019t enough to scare LA away, Hunter\u2019s contract might: he is making $23 million this season and nearly $25 million the next. Trading at least two players for a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/fadeawayworld.net\/nba-trade-rumors\/cleveland-cavaliers\/cavaliers-players-likely-traded\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cgood but not great\u201d wing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not a risk the Lakers can afford to take\u2014especially with the team\u2019s hot start despite numerous obstacles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Lakers are serious about upgrades, they are still better off pushing for Jones, who checks all of the boxes as an athletic two-way player and is on a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/player\/_\/id\/74142\/herb-jones\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cheaper, long-term contract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
