However, they must get back on track ahead of a grueling east coast trip. LA will face the Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers as part of a three-games-in-four-nights stretch later this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While head coach JJ Redick acknowledged the slate will be a \u201ctough challenge\u201d for the Lakers, what may be just as difficult is figuring out what to do with two notable contributors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Face Key Dilemmas Ahead of East Coast Tilt<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Rui Hachimura\u2019s Status<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has enjoyed an excellent start to the season, averaging 14 points on 54% shooting from the field. But it came to a screeching halt after he only took one shot against Phoenix. Addressing the media postgame, he <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/rui-hachimura-stresses-need-for-lakers-to-keep-ball-moving-after-only-getting-1-shot-in-loss-to-suns\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playing with these guys, I signed up for that. I understand it\u2026 But with this, I think the whole team, everyone knows and understands, that\u2019s not how we\u2019re gonna win. Those games that we\u2019ve been winning, we\u2019ve been passing to each other, we\u2019ve been trusting each other and playing for each other to win those games. So it\u2019s a tough one for me, but it is what it is. It\u2019s one of those games where I gotta just [forget it] and move on to the next game.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hachimura has proven he fits in well alongside <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and games like Monday\u2019s could easily be considered a one-off performance. However, as common themes emerge among LA\u2019s five losses, getting Rui back on track may require a change to the first unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In evaluating the Lakers\u2019 setbacks, insider Jovan Buha <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jovanbuha\/status\/1995956930469409120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">highlighted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the team\u2019s struggles with speed, athleticism, shooting and ball security. He added that a short-term solution could involve <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jovanbuha\/status\/1995959020855922738\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moving Hachimura to the bench<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, writing: \u201cLA has a 128.3 defensive rating and -5.6 net rating with those three on the floor (w\/ three of their four opponents being lottery teams).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such a move would not be a result of Hachmura\u2019s recent comments. Rather, it could serve as a different look for a team that already has three dominant scorers at its disposal\u2014something that was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/08\/08\/lakers-bold-change-marcus-smart-starting-lineup\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">floated around<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when the Lakers signed <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smartma01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcus Smart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this summer. Vasquez-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>Jarred Vanderbilt\u2019s Standing<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite posting a clean bill of health entering this season, defensive ace <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vandeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jarred Vanderbilt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has gotten the short end of the stick ever since James returned from sciatica. In 18.4 minutes per game, Vando has put up 4.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 44% from the field, 28.6% from three and 84% from the free-throw line. However, he hasn\u2019t seen a second of action since James made his season debut on Nov. 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/lakers-news-jj-redick-explains-why-jarred-vanderbilt-has-been-out-of-rotation\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick addressed Vanderbilt\u2019s situation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Tuesday and commended the eighth-year wing\u2019s professionalism throughout the ordeal.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe\u2019s been good. He\u2019s been a pro, he\u2019s been great in the most recent stay-ready that we had this week. He was great. He\u2019s been a great teammate, so no surprise there. I communicated to him before LeBron came back that there were certain things that he needed to be able to do consistently to play before LeBron came back, after LeBron came back, and that there was potentially gonna be a numbers crunch because we probably were gonna play a nine-man rotation and that was just the reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He emphasized that Vanderbilt\u2019s exit from the rotation is not permanent, adding:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you\u2019re winning games, it\u2019s hard to re-do the rotation mid-winning streak. So we\u2019re looking at everything \u2026 But I certainly have empathy for him and it\u2019s not an easy situation to be in as a coach and certainly not a fun situation for him to be in as a player.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jovanbuha\/status\/1995664447013356002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> continues to miss time due to back spasms, it may give Vanderbilt a chance to take over as the bench\u2019s lead ball stopper, a role he embraced throughout his tenure with the purple and gold.
