With <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aytonde01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deandre Ayton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exiting due to a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/47080259\/lakers-deandre-ayton-ruled-vs-jazz-right-knee-contusion\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knee contusion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, head coach JJ Redick turned to an unlikely backup who made the most of his opportunity: <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/klebima01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maxi Kleber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 33-year-old forward\/center played 14 minutes in the second half of LA\u2019s fourth straight win, finishing with two points (on a crunch time dunk), three rebounds and a block. You want to see them succeed.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/nYUIN0oqXcw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kleber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brought some much-needed toughness to the Lakers and showed some mobile defense Sunday night\u2014critical for a team <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/teams\/advanced?dir=A&amp;sort=DEF_RATING\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the middle of the pack on that end of the floor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Insider <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lcFcYJdsUvU\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jovan Buha<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posited that Kleber may have a case to enter the team\u2019s rotation, emphasizing his ability to make an impact beyond scoring. In addition to his movement, physicality, and shot selection, Buha brought up Kleber\u2019s high basketball IQ, including times where he tipped the ball out of bounds so the Lakers could set up their defense.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBetween the rebounding, the multi-positional defense, \u2026 he\u2019s just a sturdy, reliable, solid veteran big man, and sometimes the Lakers need that. The Lakers high variance players that can be very helpful or very destructive at times. There might be a game where he gets hot from three and hits a few, but that\u2019s probably going to be few and far between. It\u2019s primarily just doing the little things that don\u2019t necessarily show up on the box score, but do show up in plus-minus and do show up in clearly the coaching staff trusting him, and having him close over Jaxson\u2014despite Jaxson having a decent game in his own right.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>The Last Word<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kleber may have a prime opportunity to prove himself if Ayton remains out, but he definitely gives the Lakers\u2019 frontcourt a unique look and has burst onto the team\u2019s radar now that he\u2019s fully healthy.
