{"id":166540,"date":"2025-11-12T11:07:29","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T16:07:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/?p=166540"},"modified":"2025-11-12T11:07:29","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T16:07:29","slug":"could-a-ja-morant-to-the-clippers-trade-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/11\/12\/could-a-ja-morant-to-the-clippers-trade-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Could a Ja Morant to the Clippers Trade Work?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the Clippers fall deeper and deeper into a hole, can they explore a trade with the Grizzlies for disgruntled star<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moranja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ja Morant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Could a Ja Morant to the Clippers Trade Work?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After their loss against the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, the Los Angeles Clippers fell to a 3-7 record&#8212;their worst start since the 2023-2024 season.\u00a0 Although the Clippers still went on to win 51 games that season and finish 4th in the West, that roster was vastly different from the squad now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For starters,<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leonaka01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kawhi Leonard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James Harden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/z\/zubaciv01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ivica Zubac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/batumni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicolas Batum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the only players who remained on the roster. Second, the players mentioned were three years younger. Third, the squad still had other scoring threats such as<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/georgpa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul George<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/westbru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Russell Westbrook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/powelno01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norman Powell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Clippers played at a 53 win pace last season with Norm in the lineup. <br \/>Clippers played at a 57 win pace with Bogi in the lineup last season (granted it was 60 games to 30)<\/p>\n<p>Lost both of them (for different reasons) and were unable to sign playable guards. Granted, Ty Lue is still in his \u201cexamination phase,\u201d in which he is still looking for optimal lineups that revolve not only around Leonard and Harden as the scoring options. This phase has existed for many seasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This season, however, is starting to feel like a nightmare.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/11\/08\/cam-christie-save-clippers\/\" target=\"_self\">failed to meet the expectations<\/a> placed on them in the offseason, following a 3-7 record after one of the easiest opening schedules in the league<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. No one aside from the two stars has stepped up during Lue\u2019s experimentation. Steve Ballmer may have to look at shuffling the team around before things get much worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How would it work?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morant is having a down year scoring-wise by his standards. The high-flying guard is averaging 19.2 points while shooting a career-low 35.8% from the field so far. His performance this season has been hampered by the ongoing saga between him and the Memphis Grizzlies. If you\u2019re Steve Ballmer, and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a player like <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/11\/08\/inside-the-growing-rift-between-ja-morant-and-tuomas-lisalo\/\" target=\"_self\">Morant<\/a>, who is still 26 years old, becomes available<\/span>, p<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erhaps it\u2019s time for another significant change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what can the Clippers give to satisfy the Grizzlies to trade their franchise star? If NBA insider <a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/25279743-nba-insider-says-execs-really-have-no-interest-ja-morant-trade-amid-rumors\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc Spears<\/a> is to be believed, not much, due to the low interest that other teams have in trading for the controversial Morant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A package that involves<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/collijo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Collins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bogdabo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bogdan Bogdanovic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dunnkr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kris Dunn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a 2030 first-round pick could be the Clippers\u2019 best offer without sacrificing the team\u2019s championship hopes for the rest of Leonard and Harden\u2019s contracts, which are set to expire next season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the Clippers were taking on Morant as something of a rebuild, they would have to trade Harden, who has shown that he is still capable of being a team\u2019s primary scorer, in a deal that also involves a couple of first-rounders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Is it worth it?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exciting Morant will undoubtedly bring a much-needed burst of energy and youth to the Clippers, but would it really be worth it to trade away more of the team\u2019s future picks alongside one of the team\u2019s bright spots this season in Collins?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Granted, the team\u2019s present state could still work out, just like it did two seasons ago. But most of the Clippers\u2019 main problems so far are the lack of scoring options outside of Harden and Leonard. If Morant comes to Los Angeles, it would certainly fill the third-scoring hole left by Norm Powell, but it wouldn\u2019t fix the rest of the team\u2019s overarching problems on both ends.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, if Ballmer chooses to trade for Morant by unloading Harden and thus starting a new era, he would have two choices: build around a Morant-Leonard partnership or go full-throttle in dealing all of the team\u2019s trade pieces for young players and draft picks. The former setup would be similar to the current one, in which both stars become the primary ball handlers, focusing on isolation sets with shooters waiting on the wings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Ballmer decides to go with the latter and succeeds in trading away Leonard, it would effectively mark the end of what was once a promising era centered around Leonard, focusing more on building a new generation of Clippers basketball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether or not Morant does indeed come to Los Angeles, the next couple of months will be pivotal for the Clippers, who will look to salvage their season, and for the ever-present Ballmer, who will keep a close eye on potential additions \u2013 or subtractions \u2013 that he can make to maximize the season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Petre Thomas-Imagn Images<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the Clippers fall deeper and deeper into a hole, can they explore a trade with the Grizzlies for disgruntled star Ja Morant?
