{"id":16654,"date":"2018-08-16T09:27:35","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T13:27:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/?p=16654"},"modified":"2026-02-28T15:13:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-28T20:13:25","slug":"eastern-conference-off-season-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2018\/08\/16\/eastern-conference-off-season-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"NBA Eastern Conference Off-Season Recap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/boston-celtics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boston Celtics<\/a> look like they are the winners of the off-season despite not really making any significant changes to their roster during the off-season. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leonaka01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kawhi Leonard<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0gives the <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/toronto-raptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto\u00a0Raptors<\/a> a good chance to surprise Boston\u00a0if he is motivated to play and healthy. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LeBron James<\/a><\/strong> leaving the <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/cleveland-cavaliers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cleveland\u00a0Cavaliers<\/a> makes the Cavs\u00a0a poor team. Now that most of the summer movement is complete we can now take a look at the key moves for each team in the Eastern Conference.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>NBA Eastern conference Off-Season Recap<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2>Toronto Raptors<\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 59-23<\/p>\n<p>Toronto is all in on one year with Leonard. If Leonard can motivate\u00a0himself and get back to the level he is capable of playing at, then the Raptors may surprise everybody and come out of the east.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto also acquired<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenda02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Green<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and retained their sixth man,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vanvlfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fred VanVleet<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Boston Celtics<\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 55-27<\/p>\n<p>Despite not making any significant changes to their roster, the Celtics\u00a0are the favorites to come out of the east due to the tremendous depth they have. They managed to keep <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/baynear01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aron Baynes<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smartma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Smart<\/a><\/strong>. However, the biggest addition will be having a healthy <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/irvinky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyrie Irving<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/haywago01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordon Hayward<\/a><\/strong> to play alongside <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatumja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jayson Tatum<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownja02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jaylen Brown<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/horfoal01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Horford<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roziete01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Terry Rozier<\/a><\/strong>. The roster is extremely deep and talented with a lot of potential.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/philadelphia-76ers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 52-30<\/p>\n<p>There were rumors aplenty during the beginning of the off-season that the 76ers will recruit James or trade for Leonard. When everything settled down, the 76ers did not get either player and brought back the same roster as last year. The only noteworthy additions were brought aboard through the draft. With the tenth pick, <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/07\/18\/looking-at-an-overlooked-move-in-the-nba-off-season\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the 76ers drafted <\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bridgmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikal Bridges<\/a><\/strong> and traded him to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/phoenix-suns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phoenix Suns<\/a> for<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithzh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zhaire Smith<\/a><\/strong>. Smith is an athletic and good defensive 6 foot 4 guard.<\/p>\n<p>The hope for 76ers fans is that<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fultzma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Markelle Fultz<\/a><\/strong> develops into a player worthy of the first pick in the draft and that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmobe01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Simmons<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/embiijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joel Embiid<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and the rest of the team continue to get better.<\/p>\n<h2>Cleveland Cavaliers<\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 50-32<\/p>\n<p>The biggest\u00a0drop in the standings will probably come from the Cavs. They could not retain James and did\u00a0not bring in any big free agents. They\u00a0are left\u00a0with pieces that do not inspire confidence at all. The Cavs signed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nwabada01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Nwaba<\/a><\/strong>, and they gave <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/loveke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Love<\/a><\/strong> a four-year extension. The biggest move was drafting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sextoco01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Collin Sexton<\/a><\/strong>, the point guard\u00a0of the future (hopefully). As a result of the lowered expectations,\u00a0it is possible Sexton will get a lot of playing time and develop quickly.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/indiana-pacers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indiana Pacers<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 48-34<\/p>\n<p>The Pacers had a strong off-season. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stephla01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lance Stephenson<\/a><\/strong>, left but they replaced him with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/evansty01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyreke Evans<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcderdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug McDermott<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oquinky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle O&#8217;Quinn<\/a><\/strong> were also signed. They drafted <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidaa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Holiday<\/a><\/strong>,who can possibly be the backup point guard.<\/p>\n<p>The Pacers were a surprising young team last year and seem to have gotten better.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/miami-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miami Heat<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 44-38<\/p>\n<p>The Heat have pretty much the same exact roster as last year. They had no draft picks and no cap space.<\/p>\n<h2>Milwaukee Bucks<\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 44-38<\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee decided to not commit big money to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/parkeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jabari Parker<\/a> <\/strong>and let him leave. They signed some nice bench players in<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/connapa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pat Connaughton<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/ilyaser01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ersan<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/ilyaser01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Ilyasova<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0Plus, they brought in<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lopezbr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brook Lopez<\/a><\/strong> on a one year deal.<\/p>\n<p>With the 17th pick in the draft, the Bucks drafted\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/divindo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donte DiVincenzo<\/a><\/strong>, a talented guard who can shoot and play defense.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/washington-wizards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Wizards<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 43-39<\/p>\n<p>Washington wanted some more depth in the backcourt, so they sent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gortama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcin Gortat<\/a><\/strong> to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/riverau01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Rivers<\/a><\/strong>. Consequently, they signed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/howardw01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dwight Howard<\/a> <\/strong>to replace Gortat. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenje02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Green<\/a> <\/strong>was also brought over to join Rivers as part of the bench unit. With their first-round pick, the Wizards selected<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/browntr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Troy Brown<\/a><\/strong>, a project who will not have much of an impact this year.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/detroit-pistons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Pistons<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 39-43<\/p>\n<p>The Pistons drafted <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomakh01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Khyri Thomas<\/a><\/strong>, who was a good shooter in college. Plus, he was an incredible defender. Without having much cap space, they signed veteran point guard <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caldejo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jose Calderon<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pachuza01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zaza Pachulia<\/a><\/strong>. Another move they made that may have an impact this year is the signing of<strong> Glenn<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Robinson III<\/strong>. He showed promise two years ago and was hurt last year, so he is worth a roll of the dice.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/charlotte-hornets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Charlotte Hornets<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 36-46<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/howardw01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dwight Howard<\/a><\/strong> was not popular in the Hornets locker room, so they shipped him to the Brooklyn Nets for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mozgoti01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timofey Mozgov<\/a><\/strong>. Then, they shipped Mozgov to Orlando for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/biyombi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bismack Biyombo<\/a><\/strong>. Needing some veteran presence, the Hornets signed 4x NBA Champion\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/parketo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Parker<\/a><\/strong>. The biggest addition may be rookie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bridgmi02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miles Bridges<\/a><\/strong>. He can score, rebound and create mismatches offensively due to his size.<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/new-york-knicks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Knicks<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>2017-18 record 29-53<\/p>\n<p>With<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porzikr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kristaps Porzingis<\/a><\/strong> likely out for most of the season, the Knicks were not looking to add big pieces to win now. They signed two rotational pieces in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hezonma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mario Hezonja<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vonleno01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Noah Vonleh<\/a><\/strong>. Above all, they may have drafted two legitimate NBA players in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/knoxke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Knox<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/robinmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mitchell Robinson<\/a><\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2017\/12\/01\/donovan-mitchell-may-be-steal-2017-nba-draft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">who may be an unbelievable pick at thirty-six<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Brooklyn Nets<\/h2>\n<p>2018-18 record 28-54<\/p>\n<p>The Nets are building towards next off-season. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/07\/31\/brooklyn-nets-off-season-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they have improved the team a little bit<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrijo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Harris<\/a><\/strong> is coming back.
