It&#8217;s been this way for a few years now. After the deals this off-season, it&#8217;s showing absolutely no signs of slowing down or letting the East get its turn in the spotlight. Having said that, there might be some welcome surprises in terms of who will be the strongest in the West. Nothing will ever be straightforward in this game.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Western Conference Division Winner Predictions<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>*<em>all standings are for the 2017\/18 season<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Northwest Division<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/portland-trail-blazers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Portland Trail Blazers <\/a>(49-33) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/oklahoma-city-thunder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a> (48-34) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/utah-jazz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Utah Jazz<\/a> (48-34) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/minnesota-timberwolves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Timberwolves<\/a> (47-35) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/denver-nuggets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denver Nuggets<\/a> (46-36)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Low<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>You can&#8217;t really say there&#8217;s a lot of lows here, as 4 of the 5 teams made the playoffs. But there is some. After what might be seen as an overachieved season, Denver seemingly got worse, but there is potential.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/portemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Porter, Jr.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>was once seen as the consensus #1 pick. But, after sitting out the majority of the season at Missouri, he dropped to the 13th pick in the draft; even the Nuggets would tell you that&#8217;s a gamble. If he remains healthy, then he&#8217;ll be able to show why he was the top high-school prospect in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Denver also signed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomais02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isaiah Thomas<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>to a minimum deal, giving him the chance to reinvent himself. Although\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/farieke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenneth Faried<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is now a Net, the fans shouldn&#8217;t be too concerned. This is now wholly\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jokicni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikola Jokic<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s team. Denver re-signed him to a 5-year $148 million maximum deal to be the franchise cornerstone. After setting career highs in all 5 major stats, he&#8217;s looking at a possible MVP type breakout in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>The Timberwolves made the playoffs for the first time since 2004 but don&#8217;t count on it happening this time.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/townska01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Karl-Anthony Towns<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>had another strong season, averaging 21 and 10, but his defense was still his undoing. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wiggian01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrew Wiggins<\/a><\/strong> contributed with 18 PPG, but with an Offensive Win Share of only 0.5, he never made a huge impact.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/butleji01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jimmy Butler<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>missed 23 games and has quickly become unsettled. He&#8217;s voiced his concern with the work ethic and defense of the young T-Wolves, even going as far as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nba.com\/article\/2018\/07\/13\/report-jimmy-butler-denies-minnesota-timberwolves-extension\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rejecting<\/a> a 4-year\/$110million extension. It&#8217;s unlikely he&#8217;ll remain in Minnesota for the whole season.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Highs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>On the one hand, the Jazz overachieved last season and have a bright young team to build around.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mitchdo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Donovan Mitchell<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is the highlight, quickly catapulting himself close to &#8216;phenom&#8217; status. Don&#8217;t forget about\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/goberru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rudy Gobert<\/a><\/strong>, who&#8217;s in the running for DPOY every year. Winning it last year, he averaged a modest 13\/11 to go with a monster 2.3 BPG. However, there&#8217;s been no new signings and the only re-signees are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/e\/exumda01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dante Exum<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/favorde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derrick Favors<\/a>, <\/strong>and <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/netora01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raul Neto<\/a><\/b>.<b>\u00a0<\/b>There may not be much improvement from their 48-34 record, but they are a strong team nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>The most activity in this division came from the Thunder, one of the most active teams in the league. The big decision was re-signing <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/georgpa01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul George<\/a> <\/b>to a 4-year max deal. Possibly an even bigger decision, however, was <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/07\/29\/cutting-dead-weight-okc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">getting rid of Carmelo Anthony<\/a>. Historically poor during his lone season in the Sooner State, shooting a career-low 40%, he actually cost the team 3 wins (-2.97 Wins Above Replacement). <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schrode01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dennis Schroder<\/a><\/strong> arrived with the Melo trade, and will become a valuable backup point guard. Sam Presti also signed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/noelne01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nerlens Noel<\/a><\/strong>, who averaged, 13 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 2.4 steals per 36 minutes. With <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roberan03.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andre Roberson<\/a><\/strong> healthy again, OKC may be setting their sights on the division title, which isn&#8217;t completely out of their reach.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Portland is a mixed bag. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lillada01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Damian Lillard<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>&amp;\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccolcj01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CJ McCollum<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>combined for 48 PPG last season (27 and 21, respectively). Lillard was also 5th in the entire league in Win Shares (12.6). On top of that, both guards ranked in the top 5 in Field Goals Made, a sign of their efficiency. Apart from that, however, there isn&#8217;t else much to smile about. While\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seth Curry<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>comes in as a strong shooter, the rest of the squad is mediocre at best.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Division Winner:\u00a0<\/strong>Oklahoma City<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Pacific Division<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/golden-state-warriors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Golden State Warriors<\/a> (58-24) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/los-angeles-clippers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Clippers<\/a> (42-40) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/los-angeles-lakers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Lakers<\/a> (35-47) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/sacramento-kings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sacramento Kings<\/a> (27-55) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/phoenix-suns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phoenix Suns<\/a> (21-61)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Lows<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The rebuilding should be complete and Phoenix are ready to win some ballgames. #1 pick\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aytonde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeAndre Ayton<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has dominated at every level he&#8217;s played at, and should form a ferocious 1-2 punch with\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=bookede01,bookede02&amp;search=Devin+Booker&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devin Booker<\/a><\/strong>. Booker is coming off a season in which he scored 25 PPG on 43% shooting. He&#8217;s only 21, and is locked down for 5 years and $158 million. He could become a top-10 player in the league if he sticks to his game. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bridgmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mikal Bridges<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jacksjo02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Jackson<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bendedr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dragan Bender<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>round off a very promising young core. Give it a year, they should be sitting in the &#8216;Highs&#8217; section.<\/p>\n<p>Likewise to Phoenix, Sacramento also has a very promising squad of young talent. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/masonfr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Mason III<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=jacksju01,jacksju02&amp;search=Justin+Jackson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Jackson<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>are going into sophomore seasons with something to prove. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hieldbu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buddy Hield<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/foxde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">De&#8217;Aaron Fox<\/a><\/strong> show a lot of potential. The final piece is 2nd overall pick\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/baglema01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marvin Bagley III<\/a><\/strong>, who averaged 21 and 11 in his only season at Duke. They don&#8217;t have as much potential as the Suns, but they should win more than 27 games.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an unpopular opinion; the Clippers will finish last in the division. The star of the team now is 6th-man\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willilo02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lou Williams<\/a><\/strong>. Although a deadly scorer, he can&#8217;t carry the team by himself. Losing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jordade01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>DeAndre Jordan<\/strong><\/a> is the biggest blow to the Clippers in recent years. In the past 5 seasons, he&#8217;s not averaged\u00a0<em>below\u00a0<\/em>13.6 RPG (including a mighty 3.6 offensive rebounds). He&#8217;s actually the NBA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/leaders\/fg_pct_career.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all-time leader<\/a> in career FG% (minimum 2,000 FG) which undoubtedly leaves a crater in the offense.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gortama01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcin Gortat<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>will not be able to fill that hole, not even close. The Clippers are no longer the best team that plays in Staples Center. They won&#8217;t be for a\u00a0<em>long\u00a0<\/em>time.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Highs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For the first time in a long time, the Lakers are a &#8216;high&#8217;.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LeBron James<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has &#8216;taken his talents&#8217; to Hollywood; that alone is enough for contention. Now, the Lakers are stacked. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsma02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Magic Johnson<\/strong><\/a> and Rob Pelinka have found a balance between young and old while building a well-rounded, elite team.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rondora01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rajon Rondo<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/beaslmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Beasley<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcgeeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JaVale McGee<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stephla01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lance Stephenson<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>all followed LeBron in the door. Rondo is a maestro, Beasley is a scorer, and McGee and Lance Stephenson are both proven role players. LA also re-signed\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caldwke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kentavious Caldwell-Pope<\/a><\/strong>, a starting 2-guard with a chip on his shoulder. That&#8217;s just the veterans.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/balllo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lonzo Ball<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/i\/ingrabr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Ingram<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hartjo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Hart<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kuzmaky01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Kuzma<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>make up an extremely <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/2018\/04\/06\/los-angeles-lakers-young-core-primed-for-greatness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">exciting young core<\/a>. It&#8217;s not too farfetched to see them challenge for the division in years to come, is it?<\/p>\n<p>Having said that, the Warriors got better. He averaged 25 and 13 last season, which makes the Warriors&#8217; starting line-up even more deadly. After back-to-back championships and Finals MVPs,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Durant<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>obviously re-signed. He&#8217;s back in Oakland on a 2-year $61.5 million deal, looking to build upon the 25.7 PPG he&#8217;s averaged in his 2 seasons in Cali.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/curryst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Stephen Curry<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thompkl01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Klay Thompson<\/strong><\/a>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greendr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Draymond Green<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>are perennial All-Stars. Their young talent completes an ungodly team that will always be in the running for a title. The scariest part is that their starters can combine for 100 points on any given night. Worry about them too much, the bench will drop 50. It&#8217;s a hard knock life in the Pacific.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Division Winner:\u00a0<\/strong>Golden State<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Southwest Division<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/houston-rockets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Houston Rockets<\/a> (65-17) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/new-orleans-pelicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Orleans Pelicans<\/a> (48-34) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/san-antonio-spurs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">San Antonio Spurs<\/a> (47-35) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/dallas-mavericks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dallas Mavericks<\/a> (24-58) &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/lwosonnba.ms.lastwordonsports.com\/nba-teams\/memphis-grizzlies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Memphis Grizzlies<\/a> (22-60)<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Lows<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It must be tiring to be a basketball fan in Memphis, Tennessee.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gasolma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marc Gasol<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>is arguably wasting his prime on a constantly rebuilding team. He&#8217;s producing at an elite level but the supporting cast is letting him down. Apart from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/conlemi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Conley<\/a><\/strong>, who should be healthy this season, the rest of the starters would be role players on a strong team. Everyone needs to step up. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/parsoch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chandler Parsons<\/a><\/strong> is a good shooter\/scorer, but won&#8217;t wow you. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/templga01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Garrett Temple<\/a><\/strong> is underwhelming but can still put points on the board. Unless the team pulls itself together and makes a splash, it doesn&#8217;t look good. Barring a miracle, they&#8217;re looking at another sub-30 win season.<\/p>\n<p>Although Dallas only won 24 games, they have upside. Mark Cuban is trying to build a winner, or at least, less of a loser. Jordan comes in with unbelievable paint protection; see above for the full story. They also drafted European phenom <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luka Doncic<\/a><\/strong>, who should add something to the team instantly.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/s\/smithde03.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dennis Smith, Jr.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>puts an impressive rookie season behind him, looking to improve his scoring as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LastWordHoops\/status\/1027710537466044418\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his bounce<\/a>. They also drafted\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/antetko01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kostas Antetokounmpo<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>as Mr. Irrelevant, but if he&#8217;s anything like his brother, the Mavericks should look stronger.<\/p>\n<h3>The Highs<\/h3>\n<p>Even without <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leonaka01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kawhi Leonard<\/a><\/strong>, the Spurs managed to win 47 games. This speaks to the nature of the team, and the strength of Gregg Popovich as a head coach. Although <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/parketo01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Parker<\/a><\/strong> is gone, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/derozde01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeMar DeRozan<\/a><\/strong> is in. His deadly mid-range game should fill the Kawhi hole. Although it might take some time to integrate, his raw talent is undeniable. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gayru01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rudy Gay<\/a><\/strong> should be looking to prove the critics wrong; being on a gradual decline over the past few seasons. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/belinma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marco Belinelli<\/a> <\/strong>may come in as a catch-and-shoot player, having a 54.8 eFG% last season in those situations. Plus,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aldrila01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LaMarcus Aldridge<\/a><\/strong> is looking like he did in Portland, which should concern other teams.<\/p>\n<p>New Orleans is a tough nut to crack. Cousins has gone ring-chasing in Oakland, so <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisan02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Davis<\/a><\/strong> is back to being the only star. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/randlju01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Julius Randle<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paytoel01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elfrid Payton<\/a>, <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/okafoja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jahlil Okafor<\/a><\/strong> arrive knowing they have big shoes to fill. While<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holidjr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jrue Holiday<\/a><\/strong> showed his elite skills last season, averaging a career-high 19 PPG, but he still has more to prove. He has the ability to become a top point guard in the West. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mirotni01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nikola Mirotic<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mooreet01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">E&#8217;Twaun Moore<\/a> <\/strong>are both capable shooters, but have consistency issues, and are still low-tier players. The Pelicans might not win 48 games again, but they should still easily make the playoffs.<\/p>\n<p>The easiest section of the puzzle is Houston. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hardeja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Harden<\/a><\/strong> took home MVP honors after setting the league alight. His 15.4 win shares led both conferences, and at age 28, he&#8217;s currently at his peak. Over the last 3 seasons, Harden averaged 29.5 points and 9.2 assists per game. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paulch01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Paul<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greenge01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gerald Green<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/capelca01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clint Capela<\/a> <\/strong>all re-signed. The latter is probably the most important. Capela averaged 14\/11, shooting a mind-boggling 65% from the field. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hilarne01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nene<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsjo02.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Johnson<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderry01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Anderson<\/a><\/strong> are all reliable, impact veterans who know what their role is and how they&#8217;re most valuable to the team. On top of that, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gordoer01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Gordon<\/a><\/strong> will always be a candidate for the Sixth Man award. The only thing that might hold Houston back is Melo. Unless he fits himself in with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dantomi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike D&#8217;Antoni<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s system and comes off the bench, he&#8217;ll continue to be a liability.
