They have started the season with a 3-2 record, the first time they have been over .500 since January 2023. Jrue Holiday’s Blazers role as the veteran leader has been a significant addition to the team.

The Growing Importance of Veteran Jrue Holiday’s Blazers Role

When the Portland Trail Blazers traded Anfernee Simons for Jrue Holiday, the fans were concerned. They had a promising 26-year-old in Anfernee Simons, and they traded him for a veteran in his mid-30s, Jrue Holiday. Blazers fans are now ecstatic with the move after Holiday’s strong start.

The 35-year-old guard is averaging 19.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 7.8 assists per game. He is the Trail Blazers’ starting point guard and has proven to be a game-changing veteran leader.

Most of the Blazers’ roster consists of younger players, so having a level-headed player embrace his role is key. Now, they have started with a 3-2 record, the first time they’ve been over .500 since January 2023.

Holiday’s Blazers Role Will Continue to Be Impactful

The Trail Blazers are an exciting team because they play a unique brand of basketball. Everyone knows they are a defense-focused team, but their offense has been more dynamic than expected.

Holiday plays a significant role there because he settles the team down with his floor general traits. Any time the Blazers need someone to control the pace, they give the ball to Holiday and let him work.

With his experience as a 17-year NBA veteran, Holiday knows what it takes to be both a scorer and playmaker. That is evident with his statistics to start the year, and how interim head coach Tiago Splitter trusts him.

Jrue Holiday is averaging his most points (19.6) and assists (7.8) since 2018 with the Pelicans

Last 3 Games
27 PTS, 8 AST (63% FG)
24 PTS, 6 AST (67% FG)
21 PTS, 7 AST (50% FG)pic.twitter.com/oWNW8FDpZ1

— Ballislife.com (@Ballislife) October 30, 2025

The team also knows this because any time they are in a pickle, Holiday gets the ball. He has always been a reliable shooter, but he is taking the most threes in his career this season.

With 6.8 attempts per game, he is hitting at an efficient 38.2% clip. Combine that with his playmaking and overall leadership, and it’s not surprising they have a 3-2 record.

The Blazers’ Roster is Doing Well Under Splitter

Portland has a strong roster with Deni Avdija, Toumani Camara, Shaedon Sharpe, and Donovan Clingan as the other starters. Defensively, they have been superb, but their firepower has surprised people.

Of course, Jerami Grant deserves praise because he has found new life as a super sixth man. Coach Splitter is using some unique rotations when he puts Grant in quite early, which has been effective. Most players are fresh by the time the fourth quarter comes around.

With the use of a solid rotation, the Blazers have found a good balance. Of course, it is not all sunshine and rainbows because they lack a floor general without Holiday. Blake Wesley has done well as a disruptor, but he is not a true floor general like Jrue.

Thankfully, Scoot Henderson is recovering well from his hamstring injury. When he returns, the Blazers will have a strong rotation between Holiday, Henderson, and Wesley.

Jrue’s decision-making as their de facto veteran leader has been significant in their success. If he can relay that to Henderson, the Blazers will continue to have a bright future with a young star.

Holiday and Lillard’s Leadership Through a Tough Time

The Trail Blazers’ performances should be the biggest headline story with this team. That is not the case because of the major controversies surrounding head coach Chauncey Billups. He is now away from the team because of his major off-court issues, which could have thrown the Blazers off.

Ramona Shelburne published an extensive article on the events that unfolded within the Chauncey Billups scandal, including what happened to the current Blazers after the news broke

In it is this blurb that showcases Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday's leadership:

"Before Friday's… pic.twitter.com/ur8xAE2cqm

— Blazers Lead (@BlazersLead) October 30, 2025

Thankfully, the Blazers have reliable veteran leaders in the locker room in Holiday and Damian Lillard. The latter might not be playing games, but he is making a major impact for the team behind the scenes.

Business as usual has happened with the Trail Blazers, and they are doing well on the court. Holiday can handle the leadership while playing, while Lillard is the voice in the locker room. It is a good mix because the Blazers want to keep going on this promising year.

© Gary A.
