News of the FBI\u2019s investigation into <\/span>illegal sports gambling and poker rings<\/span><\/a> rocked the NBA world Thursday. The probe has led to <\/span>34 arrests<\/span><\/a>\u2014including Portland Trail Blazers coach <\/span>Chauncey Billups<\/span><\/a> and Miami Heat guard <\/span>Terry Rozier<\/span><\/a>. It has also brought the Los Angeles Lakers into an <\/span>unwanted spotlight<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lakers Involved in FBI’s NBA Gambling Probe; JJ Redick Responds<\/b><\/h2>\n

LeBron James\u2019 Friend Leaked Lakers\u2019 Secrets<\/b><\/h3>\n

According to an unsealed federal indictment, Damon Jones, a close friend of <\/span>LeBron James<\/span><\/a> who was also a former player and assistant coach, is accused of <\/span>sharing private information about James\u2019 status<\/span><\/a> before a regular-season game in February of 2023. <\/span>According to ESPN<\/span><\/a>, Jones was an \u201cunpaid\u201d and \u201cunofficial\u201d member of former head coach Darvin Ham\u2019s staff.<\/span><\/p>\n

The game in question, a Feb. 9 duel between the Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks, came days after LeBron <\/span>broke the NBA\u2019s all-time scoring record<\/span><\/a>, and was one James did not play in due to ankle soreness. <\/span>The Athletic<\/span><\/i> reports:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>According to the indictment, Jones \u2026 sold or tried to profit from non-public information so that others could bet on it, including alleged co-conspirators Eric Earnest and Marves Fairley. It was about who would not be playing or if they would pull themselves out of games early.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA league source with knowledge of the situation told <\/span>The Athletic<\/span><\/i> that James was unaware that Jones shared information about his playing status.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The game included other absences for the Lakers aside from James. It came just <\/span>after the trade deadline<\/span><\/a> that saw them reunite with D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/a> while adding Malik Beasley<\/a> and Jarred Vanderbilt<\/a> in a three-team deal involving Russell Westbrook<\/a><\/span>. The Lakers lost to the Bucks, 115-106.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not an Isolated Incident<\/b><\/h4>\n

Jones engaged in similar behavior nearly a year later, ahead of a Jan. 15, 2024, tilt against the Oklahoma City Thunder, per <\/span>The Athletic<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c[Jones] learned from a trainer that the player was hurt and his minutes or performance would be affected. Marves Fairley, another defendant, bet $100,000 against the Lakers for this game, and the injury report simply said that the player was probable.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Lakers, however, won the game, and the player played to form. Therefore, Fairley asked Jones to repay him the $2,500 he was paid for the information.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Though the indictment only names that individual as \u201cPlayer 4,\u201d a glance at that game\u2019s <\/span>injury report<\/span><\/a> seemingly <\/span>confirms that star\u2019s identity<\/span><\/a>: ex-Laker <\/span>Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

JJ Redick on Lakers\u2019 Awareness of Anti-Gambling Rules<\/b><\/h3>\n

During Thursday\u2019s post-practice media session, head coach <\/span>JJ Redick did not specifically mention the investigation<\/span><\/a>, but noted he and the team are aware of the NBA’s <\/span>anti-gambling policies<\/span><\/a>, which prohibit players, teams and employees from betting on games or any of the league’s properties<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We’ve had two meetings on it already. It’s obviously on the front of everyone’s awareness given the last two years, but other than that, there’s no other comment.”<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So far, Redick\u2019s brief response (or lack thereof)\u00a0is the only communication from the Lakers on this matter. There\u2019s a chance that could change in the coming days, though, since the <\/span>Blazers<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>NBA<\/span><\/a> released respective statements Thursday morning.<\/span><\/p>\n
