Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images

Prediction #1: Rockets Triple-Bigs Will Lead Team In +/-

Rockets head coach Ime Udoka loves to play double bigs. However, this season, he’ll have three starting-caliber centers on the roster: All-Star Alperen Sengun, potential starter Steven Adams, and likely reserve Clint Capela. So why not triple down and go triple bigs?

Clearly, a Sengun-Adams-Capela lineup would have some serious limitations. Adams and Capela can’t really score more than five feet out from the basket. Sengun’s not exactly a stretch big either, 75.8 percent of his field goals being taken within 10 feet. A third big on the court will run out of interior space to defend in a zone, or lurk in ominously on offense.

Yet, the Sengun-Adams duo had a +5.0 on-court rating last season, second to only Sengun departed big man Jock Landale in Houston’s two-man lineups. The trio of Sengun, Adams and Capela will be played together, at least very sparingly. The lineup could be utilized situationally, such as late in games or quarters, to snare rebounds off of free-throw misses. That none of the three are excellent free-throw shooters themselves might put some dents in this otherwise flawless late-game strategy. Regardless, fans will be happy to cheer the trio.

Oct 14, 2025; Birmingham, Alabama, USA; New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado (15) and Houston Rockets guard-forward Amen Thompson (1) are pulled apart after a skirmish during an NBA preseason game at Legacy Arena at BJCC. It continues a trend from the previous two Udoka seasons, which were replete with fracases, commotions, kerfuffles, bruhahas, and spats.

The one flaw in this prediction is that the Rockets traded WWE-like heel Dillon Brooks during the offseason. Not only does that mean they don’t have him, but another team will. Will Brooks’ new team, the Phoenix Suns, suddenly become the feistiest team in the league, though? It seems a little unlikely.

Jabari Smith Jr. is another Rocket whose temper has flared, and Tari Eason is a quintessential instigator. Rockets fans aren’t actually expecting him to win Defensive Player of the Year. Barring injury, San Antonio Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama has this award locked up. Nevertheless, Thompson has proven himself to be a DPOY type of talent.

With Brooks gone, Thompson will inherit even more tough perimeter matchups. Houston should still sport one of the stingiest defenses in the league. However, for Thompson to actually win the award in 2025-26, Wembanyama would essentially have to fail to reach the 65-game minimum like last season. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Terada-Imagn Images

Prediction #4: Rockets Crash Out Of NBA Cup

The Rockets showed tremendous intensity in scrapping their way to the 2025 NBA Cup semi-finals. In theory, now that the team is better, they ought to have a shot at winning the whole thing. That will certainly be the expectation of many. However, they’re postseason contenders now and that takes precedent.

Of course, success in the NBA Cup certainly doesn’t prohibit playoff success. The Thunder reached the NBA Cup Finals and then won the NBA Finals that postseason. But that OKC team didn’t star a 37-year-old. Of course, it’s not as if Durant can’t get up for a few glorified regular-season games. Overall, in NBA Cup/in-season tournament action, he’s averaging 29.0 points on 59.8% shooting. However, Durant averaged just 18.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists over two NBA Cup games last season.

The big problem isn’t Durant, though. Houston probably just won’t treat the games with the same intensity as last season. Last season, Udoka was trying to psych his young team up for their postseason debut under his tutelage. This season, the Rockets will likely choose to pace themselves, focusing on the most valuable prize instead.

Oct 8, 2025; Houston, Texas, USA; Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant (7) drives with the ball as Utah Jazz guard Svi Mykhailiuk (10) defends during the third quarter at Toyota Center.
