Yet, UNC forward Caleb Wilson stands out as one of the most intriguing prospects. Projected to be a one-and-done, Wilson possesses an excellent blend of length, size, and athleticism, all of which enables him to be a defensive menace as well as a threat at the rim.

The 19-year-old certainly needs to refine his offensive game further and to develop his body. Nevertheless, it is easy to see the upside in a player like Wilson. With the 2025-26 college basketball season fast approaching, now is the perfect time to get familiar with his game, identifying his areas of excellence and where he needs improvement.

UNC Forward Caleb Wilson’s 2026 NBA Draft Prospect Preview

Let’s dive into Wilson’s 2026 NBA Draft prospect preview.

Oct 4, 2025; Charlotte, NC, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels forward Caleb Wilson (8) shoots but the ball rims out in the first half at Dean E. Standing at 6-foot-9, he has great size and length for his position. He’s also an extremely mobile forward who can fly all around with ease. This provides him the ability to make highlight plays on both ends of the court. On defense, he is capable of flying high to swat shots or grab rebounds. As for offense, Wilson can stampede his way into the paint for thunderous dunks.

Strong Defensive & Rebounding Presence

Wilson’s clear calling card as a player currently is his defensive ability. He has the versatility to defend multiple positions and be switchable out on the court. He uses his length particularly well as a weakside shot blocker and as a disruptor in passing lanes. In fact, he averaged 3.5 blocks and 2.1 steals per game as a high school senior, demonstrating his defensive playmaking skills. A strong rebounder, he also averaged 11.1 rebounds in his senior year. While he can be susceptible to ball-watching and the occasional blow-by, his overall defensive capabilities and potential are top-notch.

Impressive Offensive Flashes

To be sure, Wilson is at his best on defense but he’s flashed plenty on the other end. He’s immensely talented at slashing to the rim in a variety of ways. Whether it be on-ball or off-ball, in transition or in the halfcourt, he can get to the rim and finish. He certainly has enough of a handle on the ball to attack closeouts and push the pace in transition. Wilson’s also shown shooting potential with his midrange and 3-point touch.

Solid Passing Instincts

Wilson has solid playmaking skills and has good vision, which is only bolstered by his size. He can hit open teammates when the opportunity shows itself, and he has the confidence to make some pretty impressive passes for someone of his age and role. At Holy Innocents, Wilson averaged 5 assists to 3.7 turnovers per game. As he continues to develop his handle and offensive game, he can fully maximize his passing abilities.

Oct 4, 2025; Charlotte, NC, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels forward Caleb Wilson (8) shoots as forward Zayden High (1) defends in the first half at Dean E. Smith Center. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-Imagn Images

Areas Of Concern

Lack of Strength

While Wilson’s length and athleticism are easily apparent, so is the lack of strength. On the offensive end of the floor, he can be bumped off course by physically imposing defenders when driving to the basket. Defensively, he can also be knocked off balance by stronger players. He’ll undoubtedly need to add more strength to his frame, which will help him physically on both ends.

On-Ball Creation

Wilson has real work to do offensively. He has to work on his abilities as an on-ball creator in particular. While promising, his ability to handle the ball can get loose. As a result, unlike some of the other top prospects in this draft, he isn’t great at creating advantages or breaking down his defender while playing on the ball. Instead, he’ll often settle for tough jumpers when he can’t get to the rim. Yet, Wilson isn’t great in terms of post play either. Due to his raw offense, there are times when his presence can blend into the background. He definitely needs to improve his ability to generate offense if he wants to raise his ceiling.

Inconsistent Shooting

Wilson’s ball-handling isn’t the only problem, as his shooting ability is inconsistent. In his senior year at Holy Innocents, he only shot 34% from 3. He does have a functional form but the results are mixed, and his shot can be flat at times. Finding consistency and overall improvement in his shot will be an important step to take his game to the next level.

Oct 4, 2025; Charlotte, NC, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels forward Caleb Wilson (8) shoots as forward Jarin Stevenson (15) defends in the second half at Dean E. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-Imagn Images

The Last Word

Overall, Wilson is an incredibly athletic forward who has all the tools to be impactful on both ends of the floor. His ability to be a defensive stopper is recognizable, as he’s excellent at being highly disruptive out on the court. While raw offensively, he’s demonstrated great skill as a finisher and passer. His shooting and on-ball creation still need work, but he has also flashed potential in both of those areas. He may not be on the same level as Peterson, Boozer, or Dybantsa, but Wilson is still a highly talented prospect who can be a special defensive wing in the league.

© Bob Donnan-Imagn Images

The most discussed top prospects in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft are Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Duke forward Cameron Boozer, and BYU forward AJ Dybantsa.
