Mandatory Credit: Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

Back-To-Back?

After the Thunder secured the top seed in the 2024 NBA Playoffs, people probably should have taken them more seriously. Even so, OKC had a Cinderella story last season. Forget all of the convoluted conversations about small market teams. The fact that a franchise that was firm but patient in their team-building approach, preferring to build through the draft but able to outsource the right talent, was able to secure an NBA title with charismatic but serious players leading the way was epitome of what the league is about.

The question is: can the Thunder go back-to-back, repeating as NBA champions?

Health permitting, they have every chance of making it back to the big show. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren only seem to improve and their top player should still be playing at an MVP level. There is concern that Lu Dort could take a step back as an off-ball threat with only two seasons shooting above 35% in his six-year career.

Nevertheless, Oklahoma City isn’t overly reliant on the 3-ball. Plus, they could turn to Cason Wallace or Alex Caruso more if Dort’s shot isn’t falling consistently. Wallace, one of the better young defenders in the league, is a career 38.9% 3-point shooter. Caruso, who’s among the game’s top defenders, is a career 37.6 % 3-point shooter.

Speaking of the reserve unit, the Thunder should be getting a solid boost from not only Wallace and Caruso but Aaron Wiggins next season. Really, they’re like the Immortals with players like Isaiah Joe and Ajay Mitchell also available in the backcourt. Rookie big man Thomas Sorber‘s injury is a blow to their frontcourt depth even though Isaiah Hartenstein’s an important backup. If one of Jaylin Williams or Ousmane Dieng could breakout, their frontline might be solidified.

Oct 5, 2025; North Charleston, South Carolina, USA; Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball (1) passes from the key against Oklahoma City Thunder forward Ousmane Dieng (13) in the first quarter at North Charleston Coliseum. At 6-foot-10 and 222 pounds, he’s averaged 4.3 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.2 blocks per game, shooting 42.4% from the field (29.3% from 3). As one would expect, he’s done much better in the G League, averaging 17.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 0.9 blocks and 0.9 steals per game. He’s done this with solid efficiency for a perimeter-bound player, shooting 46.1% from the field (31.4% from 3).

The problem for Dieng is that he’s entering his fourth season in the league without much to show for it. That’s not what was expected when he was drafted in the lottery. However, his performance in the 2025-26 preseason may be evidence that he’s ready to turn the corner.

It’s only been two games. Nonetheless, Dieng has started both contests, averaging 14.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game. His touch has been off, as he’s shooting 39.3% from the field but he’s been a sound decision-maker. Numbers aside, he really looked the part of an NBA player, with his body and his play.

To secure a contract extension, Dieng probably needs to get the ball in the net more consistently but can he do it?

Oct 5, 2025; North Charleston, South Carolina, USA; Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nikola Topic (44) drives up the court against the Charlotte Hornets at North Charleston Coliseum. The Chicago Bulls have Nikola Vucevic, although that’s not by choice. Then the Miami Heat have Nikola Jovic, an up-and-coming player whose contract they recently extended. Atlanta Hawks rookie Nikola Djurisic, drafted in 2024, signed a three-year contract this offseason.

The Thunder have Nikola Topic. Like Djurisic, Topic is also preparing for his rookie season despite being drafted in 2024, albeit as the 12th overall pick rather than the 43rd overall pick. However, the difference between their draft positions and subsequently their upside isn’t the only difference between them. While Djurisic spent 2024-25 in the G League, Topic was out with an ACL injury.

As a result of Oklahoma City’s title run, the 6-foot-6 playmaker was pushed to the back of most people’s minds. All the same, he quickly made many remember his name. In this year’s Summer League, Topic averaged 10.8 points, 5.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game. His shots were often errant but his mind and feel were sharp. In the Thunder’s 2025-26 preseason opener, the floor general was even more on point.

Yet, OKC recently announced Topic will be re-evaluated in 4-6 weeks after undergoing a testicular operation (h/t The Stein Line’s Marc Stein). This isn’t a turning point in his career but with his frequent absences, his unreliability is becoming a problem. As they say, availability is often the best ability. So, Topic’s lack of durability begs the question: will he become a trade piece or rotation piece?

© NATHAN J.
