However, he sat out until the second half in the Nuggets preseason opener. When he did get in, Nnaji tallied four points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal in 12 minutes. Versatility aside, he went 2-6 from the field and 0-2 from 3.

Meanwhile, after being forced to sit out for the entirety of 2024-25 due to injury, DaRon Holmes II was on the court for nine minutes in Denver’s preseason opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves. In his playing time, he tallied five points, two assists and one rebounds. He took just three field goals, making one of his two 3-point attempts and heading to the free-throw line after getting fouled on a 2-point attempt.

Both were thought to be in line for minutes behind Aaron Gordon or Nikola Jokic entering the offseason. Yet, Peyton Watson was the one who subbed in for Gordon, reprising a role he’s played throughout his young career. Possessing more quick-twitch athleticism than either Nnaji or Holmes, he’s capable of mimicking Gordon as a cutter and multi-positional defender. So far as Jonas Valanciunas, he’s set to be Jokic’s first Euro-style backup since Jusuf Nurkic.

Of course, Nnaji or Holmes could still be used situationally. Outside of 6-foot-8 and 215-pound Kessler Edwards, who was asked to play center for the injury-decimated Dallas Mavericks last season, they’re the Nuggets only athletic, floor-spacing bigs.

Sep 29, 2025; Denver, CO, USA; Denver Nuggets players Jonas Valanciunas (17) and Julian Strawther (3) address the media during media day at Ball Arena. Mandatory Credit: Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

What Is Cam Johnson’s Role?

When a team trades a player for one at the same position, they’re often perceived to be their direct replacement. That belief is strengthened if those players have similar skills. Therefore, it’s natural for Nuggets fans to look at Cam Johnson as their new Michael Porter Jr., so to speak.

However, those who have conflated Johnson’s quick trigger with him being trigger-happy might be sorely disappointed. In the Nuggets preseason opener, Johnson played 15 minutes and took just three attempts, though two of those were 3-pointers. He finished the game with two points. Ironically, Porter was also debuting with his new team (the Brooklyn Nets) that night. In 17 minutes, Porter took nine attempts (including five threes), recording 13 points.

While it’s worth noting that Johnson is a connective piece for the Nuggets and Porter’s a primary scorer, the contrast between their performances that night actually reflects their creeds. Porter’s so confident in his abilities that he was prone to feeling underutilized offensively. Johnson is basically content to be a good soldier, more concerned about playing his role than getting his points up.

That isn’t to say Johnson will be happy to average two points and three shot attempts for an entire season. However, he’s much more likely to try to make himself fit in, which could lead to less scoring from the small forward position than the Nuggets have grown accustomed to.

© Denis Poroy-Imagn Images

The Denver Nuggets are about to embark on their 59th season but it’s one that’s of supreme importance.
