Nevada assistant coach Kyle Guy<\/a> is resuming his playing career.<\/p>\n

One year after announcing that he was “moving to the next chapter of [his] life,”\u00a0 Guy is making a comeback. According to the Indianapolis Star’s Dustin Dopirak<\/a>, Guy has agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract with the Indiana Pacers<\/a>. Dopirak added that the plan is for the 6-1 guard to play for the Pacers’ G-League affiliate,<\/a> the Noblesville Boom. Guy gets an $ 88,500 bonus for signing the training camp deal.<\/p>\n

Before officially joining the Pacers,<\/a> Indiana will have to make a roster move. The Pacers have 21 players on their training camp roster, including three players on training camp deals. Gabe McClothan,<\/a> who played for Denver’s<\/a> affiliate, the Grand Rapids Gold, last season, is the most likely player to be waived, as he was likely signed to play for the Boom. Delon Wright<\/a> and Jalen Slawson<\/a> are the other two players on Exhibit 10 deals.<\/p>\n

Guy was selected with the No. 55 pick by the New York Knicks<\/a> in 2019 out of Virginia. A day after drafting Guy, the Knicks<\/a> sent him and cash to Sacramento in exchange for Ignas Brazdeikis.<\/a>\u00a0 The 28-year-old spent three seasons in the NBA<\/a>, appearing in 53 games for Sacramento<\/a> and Miami<\/a> from 2019 to 2022. He spent time in the G-League during this stretch, seeing action in 57 contests, where he showcased that he was a step above that level.<\/p>\n

Guy moved across the ocean to the Spanish Club Joventut Badalona for the 2022-23 campaign. He left Joventut for Virtus Bologna in June, but reversed course and signed with Greek side Panathinaikos. Seeing limited action with Panathinaikos, Guy moved back to Spain with Lenovo Tenerife.<\/p>\n

In 46 games with Panathinaikos and Lenovo, Guy averaged 13.5 points, 2.0 assists, and 1.9 threes with splits of 42.7\/33.6\/83.4. Guy scored in double figures 30 times, topping the 20-point mark 12 times and tallied 30 or more on three occassions.<\/p>\n

Guy officially retired from basketball on August 7, 2024, joining the University of Virginia staff as a special assistant to Tony Bennett<\/a> and interim coach Ron Sanchez<\/a>. He moved to Nevada in April 2025.<\/p>\n

Expectations<\/h3>\n

It will likely take Guy a little time to ramp up, so the Pacers may not announce the signing right away. But they will have to do so before the end of camp.<\/p>\n

Expect Guy to spend the entire season in Noblesville, unless he struggles due to the time off. Guy is a tough-nosed guard known for his exceptional shooting ability and range. Guy doesn’t have great handles, but he is crafty enough to create separation off the dribble and is adept at drawing fouls.<\/p>\n

His shooting is why the Pacers are giving him another chance. Guy will have to demonstrate that he can stay in front of opposing guards to have a legitimate shot at earning a 10-day or other NBA deal.<\/p>\n

Guy’s Decision Ramifications for Nevada Basketball<\/h3>\n

Guy’s departure, with less than a month to go before the beginning of the season, left the Wolf Pack with one assistant short. However, Alford didn’t waste time filling the position, as the program announced that Jarod Lucas<\/a> was returning.<\/p>\n

“What an incredible day for our program,” Alford enthusiastically said when announcing the addition of Lucas to the staff<\/a>. “We’re thrilled to welcome back one of our best players, Jarod, to our coaching staff. His passion for Reno and the university is truly inspiring, and we can’t wait to see the positive impact he’ll have on our players every day!”<\/p>\n

Lucas played under Alford from 2022 to 2024 after transferring from Oregon State. Lucas led the Pack in scoring in both seasons while helping Nevada to two NCAA<\/a> berths. He went undrafted in 2024, although he played for the Dallas Mavericks’ summer league team that year before splitting the regular season between the G League Texas Legends and the Spanish club CB Girona.<\/p>\n
