His summer included an extended stay at a Shaolin temple in China, where he trained in meditation and martial arts to improve balance and discipline. He joined international conditioning camps in Spain, worked with Navy SEAL trainers in California, and added yoga and flexibility work to his routine. The goal was to strengthen his body while preventing another setback.

Building Momentum After Setback

Wembanyama, of course, hasn’t played in game conditions since February, when his All-Star sophomore season in San Antonio came to an abrupt end due to a blood clot. Still, Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported recently that Wembanyama “looked quite stellar” during runs at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

The numbers before his health scare told the story of a rising star. Wembanyama averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 3.8 blocks in 45 games. He shot 47.6 percent from the field, 35.2 percent from three, and 83.6 percent from the free-throw line. He earned his first All-Star selection, logged 28 double-doubles, and posted one triple-double.

Spurs Look Toward the Future

The Spurs haven’t reached the playoffs since 2019, but optimism now fills San Antonio. Wembanyama enters his third season with a stronger supporting cast, including De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper. The front office believes this young core can carry the franchise back into contention.

Victor on if he’ll be ready for opening night: “Oh yeah. A group of editors and analysts believe Wembanyama will win Defensive Player of the Year. They also ranked him fifth in the league’s top 100 players list, just below perennial MVP candidates.

The spotlight only grows brighter. Expectations are clear: dominate defensively, lead the Spurs, and show resilience after last season’s scare. The franchise will lean on him more than ever.

Wembanyama knows the pressure and welcomes it. “What I have done this summer is world class,” he reminded. For San Antonio, those words echo as both promise and warning.

The Spurs’ return to relevance hinges on whether their superstar delivers.
