The storylines are numerous and narratives are endless. While grading a team&#8217;s draft night so soon is premature, this article is the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/brooklyn-nets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brooklyn<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/brooklyn-nets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Ne<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/brooklyn-nets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">t<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/brooklyn-nets\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">s<\/a>\u00a0draft recap.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>Brooklyn Nets Draft Recap<\/strong><\/h1>\n<h2><strong>Meet the Players<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Flashback, the Nets initially had zero picks in 2018. However, they acquired draft picks from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/nba-teams\/toronto-raptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toronto Raptors<\/a> as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carrode01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>DeMarre Carroll<\/strong><\/a> trade. Nets general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/marksse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sean Marks<\/strong><\/a> scoured the globe for talent to fit his vision of the team.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, the Nets worked out at least 50 players before the draft. Last year, that number was over 60. It&#8217;s alleged that Marks interviewed last year&#8217;s first-round pick <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/allenja01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jarrett Allen<\/a><\/strong> the night before the draft.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First Round Selection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The moment @DzananM13 became a Brooklyn Net \ud83d\udcaa <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Yz8DHc82Ww\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/t.co\/Yz8DHc82Ww<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Brooklyn Nets (@BrooklynNets) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrooklynNets\/status\/1010002963862081537?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 22, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>After very intense scouting, the Nets front office selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/euro\/players\/dzanan-musa-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dzanan Musa<\/strong><\/a> with the<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonprobasketball.com\/2018\/05\/15\/dzanan-musa-nba-draft-profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> 29th pick<\/a> in the first round. Just 19 years old, Musa played for KK Cedevita in the Croatian League for the last three years. This past season, Musa led KK Cedevita to the Croatian League Championship. Musa, a native of Bosnia and Herzegovina conjures up memories of former Nets great, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/petrodr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drazen Petrovic<\/a><\/strong>. Like Petrovic, Musa is fearless and ruthless on the court.<\/p>\n<p>Draft analyst ESPN&#8217;s Jonathon Givony wrote on Twitter; &#8220;I am told that he [Musa] would have been taken much higher had he agreed to be stashed in Europe next year, but his insistence on coming to the NBA right away caused him to slip a bit.&#8221; Fellow ESPN draft analyst Mike Schmitz calls Musa, &#8220;A Bosnian scoring machine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Second Round Selection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">With the 40th pick in the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NBADraft?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#NBADraft<\/a>, the Nets select Rodions Kurucs! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DqN0pdlV8u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/DqN0pdlV8u<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Brooklyn Nets (@BrooklynNets) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BrooklynNets\/status\/1009999390990307328?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 22, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>With the 40th pick, the Nets selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/euro\/players\/rodions-kurucs-1.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Rodion Kurucs<\/strong><\/a>. Kurucs, a native of Latvia played for FC Barcelona in the Spanish ACB. A 6 foot 9 forward, Kurucs was touted as a first-round pick previously. However, last season Kurucs was used sparingly by Barcelona which undoubtedly impacted his value.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Marks on both players<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>GM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/marksse01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sean Marks<\/a> expects both players to don the black and white as part of the Nets roster this upcoming season. At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/nets\/news\/draft\/2018\/nets-welcome-dzanan-musa-and-rodions-kurucs-to-brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">introductory press conference<\/a>, Marks took the opportunity to express confidence in his team&#8217;s ability to develop talent while expressing optimism about his young charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to have both these young men here,\u201d said Marks. \u201cPart of our job is to find talent, develop talent, but more importantly develop young men. That\u2019s going to be our jobs, from the front office, from the performance staff, from the coaching staff. We\u2019re thrilled to welcome these guys to our Nets family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I look forward to getting them in here with our coaching staff, with our development staff in this system, and, to be brutally honest, to seeing what Kenny and the coaches and the performance team can do with them. These guys are both hungry. They\u2019re competitive. They\u2019ve got a certain fire and grit to them and they want to succeed. Those are some of the intangibles that you don\u2019t see on the court, you see behind closed doors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marks said\u00a0this when asked about Musa: &#8220;I think from scouting perspective we&#8217;ve enjoyed watching him play. Very dynamic. Obviously, his offensive skills are pretty special. [A good] size for [his] position. He has been playing at a very, very high level. A very competitive young man.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Marks didn&#8217;t contain his excitement when asked about Kurucs. &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure why he was there when we picked, but he is a guy that we had been targeting for some time,&#8221; Marks said. &#8220;We&#8217;re thrilled to get our hands on Rodions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What do Musa and Kurucs think<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Musa&#8217;s mentor is former Net and fellow Bosnian <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/t\/teletmi01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mirza Teletovic<\/a><\/strong>. Teletovic played a significant role in Musa&#8217;s development and as a result, Musa has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/sports\/basketball\/nets\/nets-dzanan-musa-rodions-kurucs-1.19361718\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">watching the Nets<\/a> for a while.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMirza Teletovic was playing here, so I watched the Brooklyn Nets a lot because that\u2019s my captain of the national team,\u201d Musa said. &#8220;We\u2019re good friends&#8230;I\u2019m very thankful and appreciative to have a friend like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/nets\/news\/draft\/2018\/nets-welcome-dzanan-musa-and-rodions-kurucs-to-brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spoke<\/a> respectfully of Drazen Petrovic as well:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know so much about him when I was playing in Bosnia,\u201d said Musa. \u201cBut as soon as I came into Croatia, I realized how big a person, how big a player he was. I was very glad to play in his gym multiple times and I was very glad to have spoken to his friends, to his mom. She gave me advice how to succeed and you cannot buy that. That\u2019s really amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked who his favorite players were, Musa said<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bryanko01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kobe Bryant<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/g\/ginobma01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manu Ginobili<\/a><\/strong>. He cited Bryant&#8217;s killer instinct and Ginobili&#8217;s leadership as the qualities he favored.<\/p>\n<p>Kurucs is acutely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/sports\/basketball\/nets\/nets-dzanan-musa-rodions-kurucs-1.19361718\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aware of what the Nets organization<\/a> will do for his development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was super, super surprised. Actually, that was where I wanted to go, this place with the Nets. I\u2019m happy to be here. I know the staff is great here, the club is great for the performance, and I know they\u2019ll work with the young guys&#8230;They give you everything you need to improve your game. That\u2019s the most important thing on this club.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s not forget Kurucs hails from Latvia. Across the Brooklyn Bridge, there&#8217;s a Latvian star representing the New York Knicks. Asked about playing against <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porzikr01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kristaps Porzingis<\/a><\/strong>, Kurucs said &#8220;Sure and beat his ass.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kurucs mentioned <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranke01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin Durant<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/haywago01.html?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gordon Hayward<\/a> <\/strong>as his favorite players. \u201cI look more like Durant because I\u2019m so skinny. Shooting like Hayward, I have his skills. I think I\u2019m compared to him more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked if they Musa and Kurucs ever faced each other, Musa&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/nets\/news\/draft\/2018\/nets-welcome-dzanan-musa-and-rodions-kurucs-to-brooklyn\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">response<\/a> was golden. \u201cMy first game was against this guy in the national team. He kicked our ass, he scored against us like 28, 30 points, he dunked on us like eight times. So I remember this guy, a lot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, only time will tell how these players will develop.
