Following a promising injury update, will NC State’s offense improve?

NC State Gets Promising Injury Update On Senior Transfer

This past year has been chaotic for NC State basketball. Hoping to build off a great 2023-24 season, which saw NC State reach the Final Four, the losses of DJ Horne and D.J. Burns Jr. proved to be too difficult for the Wolfpack to overcome. They fell back down to earth, finishing 12-19 and missing the ACC tournament. Promptly, Kevin Keatts was fired and finished his NC State tenure with three NCAA tournament appearances and a 151-113 record.

Enter Will Wade. Despite an impressive track record with VCU and LSU and leading both schools to multiple NCAA tournament berths, Wade was fired in 2022 by LSU following recruiting violations. The following year, Wade was hired by McNeese State and did not disappoint.

During his two seasons at McNeese State, Wade had an impressive 50-9 record but most importantly led the school to two NCAA tournaments and the first tournament win in school history. Now, Will Wade will look to lead the NC State Wolfpack back to the NCAA tournament.

Promising scorer reunited with Will Wade this offseason

Alyn Breed is entering his final year of eligibility with his third school, the NC State Wolfpack. After struggling to be a consistent starter at Providence, Breed transferred to McNeese State before the 2024-25 season.

Breed started strong at McNeese State, averaging 17.5 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in two games. While the sample size was small, Breed looked significantly improved and performed well against No. 2 Alabama. However, a knee injury cut his season short. Shortly after the season ended, Breed entered the transfer portal and ended up reuniting with Will Wade at NC State.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-158875 size-large" src="https://lastwordonsports.com/basketball/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/2025/09/USATSI_24740993_168402037_lowres-1024x683.jpg" alt="Nov 11, 2024; Tuscaloosa, Alabama, USA; Alabama Crimson Tide guard Mark Sears (1) drives the ball against McNeese State Cowboys guard Alyn Breed (7) during the second half at Coleman Coliseum. Even if Alyn Breed is not ready for the start of the season, this news still leaves open the possibility that he will return long before postseason play begins. With an NC State team looking for more scoring prowess, Breed looks primed for a strong scoring impact with the Wolfpack this season.

One of the biggest catalysts for NC State’s struggles this past season was the lack of offensive firepower. NC State had the 153rd-best offensive efficiency, according to the KenPom rankings, compared to the 48th-best in the 2023-24 season. Wade has made significant efforts to boost the talent level of the NC State roster, finishing top 15 in both transfer and recruiting rankings. However, Breed’s scoring potential and experience could make him one of NC State’s most impactful transfers of the 2025 class.

The Last Word

NC State is coming off one of their most disappointing seasons in recent memory. Following the arrival of Will Wade, NC State will be looking to immediately return to the NCAA tournament this upcoming season. While Wade has brought in a very talented recruiting class and transfer class, Alyn Breed has the potential to be one of NC State’s key pieces offensively.

© Jaylynn Nash-Imagn Images

A former McNeese State guard now joins forces with Will Wade at NC State.
