On Thursday, Vanderbilt Basketball made a big splash with its 2026 recruiting class. The Commodores, out of the juggernaut Southeastern Conference (SEC), have scored a verbal commitment from 2026 four-star wing Ethan Mgbako The 6-foot-6 wing, who hails from Somerset (N.J.), is Vanderbilt’s first pledge of the 2026 cycle.<\/p>\n

Vanderbilt Makes Big Splash With Ethan Mgbako’s 2026 Pledge<\/h2>\n

Mgbako had the Commodores in a group of five finalists<\/a> that included Georgetown<\/a>, LSU<\/a>, Pittsburgh<\/a> and Texas A&M<\/a>, per Rivals insider Joe Tipton. His full scholarship offer sheet included Creighton, Florida State, George Washington, Kent State, Mississippi State, Pepperdine, Quinnipiac and West Virginia.<\/p>\n

At one time, Mgbako was unranked in the 2026 class. More recently, he’s proven to be another fast-rising prospect<\/a>. The industry-generated 247Sports Composite places Mgbako at No. 69 nationally<\/a>, No. 27 at small forward and No. 4 in Virginia. Over at the industry-generated Rivals Industry Ranking, he is No. 71 overall<\/a>, No. 25 at small forward and No. 4 in Virginia.<\/p>\n

Strong Junior Season<\/h3>\n

Mgbako attends the powerhouse Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson (VA), which competes in the loaded Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Scholastic (also known as “EYBL Scholastic”). This league, which will be expanding during their 2025-26 campaign, features top-flight independent basketball academies and prep-school teams.<\/p>\n

During the EYBL Scholastic’s regular season in 2024-25, the mighty Oak Hill only went 4-7 overall. However, Mgbako was fantastic, leading the team in several categories<\/a>. In 12 games, he averaged 16.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals per contest. He connected on 42 percent from the field, 42 percent from 3-point land and 74 percent from the free-throw line.<\/p>\n

Looking To Rebound<\/h3>\n

The Warriors went 23-11 a season ago, which isn’t up to the program’s usual standards. However, Oak Hill loaded up on transfers this past off-season. In his recent preseason top-25 ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, The Grind Hoops national analyst\/scout Samad Hines slotted the Warriors in at No. 19 overall<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Key returnees for Oak Hill are Mgbako and 2026 four-star guard Donovan Williams, both seniors. Notable 2025-26 transfers to the Warriors are 2027 five-star guard L.J. Smith, 2026 three-star center Kuol Deng, 2027 four-star forward Janon Singh, 2026 four-star wing Korie Corbett and 2026 point guard Kamauri Lawson.<\/p>\n

Terrific AAU Campaign<\/h3>\n

This spring and summer on the AAU circuit, Mgbako competed for the 17U squad of the Baltimore-based Team Melo in Nike’s EYBL league. He played extremely well. During the EYBL regular season, Mgbako averaged<\/a> 18.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per contest. In July, at the EYBL’s season-ending Peach Jam in North Augusta, S.C., Mgbako was even better, averaging<\/a> 20.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.<\/p>\n

The scouting experts at The Circuit<\/a> named him to their All-EYBL second team for the entire season. Mgbako also resided on the All-Peach Jam first squad.<\/p>\n
