In addition to evaluating Doncic\u2019s progress, Greg St. Jean has reportedly talked strategy with Slovenia\u2019s head coach, Aleksander Sekulic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers-Slovenia Connection Gets New Layer at EuroBasket<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Greg St. Jean: Slovenia Has Used Lakers Tactics in Tournament<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/basketnews.com\/news-230534-slovenia-uses-lakers-tactics-in-eurobasket-2025-games.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sept. 1 interview with BasketNews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, St. Jean\u2014who is also on Slovenia\u2019s staff for EuroBasket\u2014said he\u2019s spoken to Sekulic about how to maximize Doncic with the Lakers. Their discussions have led to the two teams swapping strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coach Sekulic is a fantastic coach, and obviously, he has a great system and has had a lot of success here with the national team. He&#8217;s coached Luka and known him for a long time. We had a relationship prior, in 2022, so we&#8217;ve talked a little bit about some different ways to utilize Luka. \u2026 And we&#8217;ve tried to all come together and put our basketball brains together to try to set our team up for success. And we&#8217;ve used a few things from the Lakers. Obviously, there&#8217;s been some stuff that we&#8217;ve used from his [Sekulic&#8217;s] book. It&#8217;s been a great partnership.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 top assistant added that he\u2019s taken notes on other EuroBasket competitors, hoping to bring part of their playbooks back to LA.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Obviously, Luka is someone who&#8217;s growing and evolving. He&#8217;s getting better every single day. But there are things that we see in the tournament, whether it&#8217;s an opponent doing it or we&#8217;re doing it, that I&#8217;ll sit there and I&#8217;ll take my notes and say, &#8216;Hey, that&#8217;s something that would be great for us to try with the Lakers. Or that&#8217;s something I haven&#8217;t seen in the NBA.&#8217; There&#8217;s a lot of really good players and really good coaches over here. He&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.fiba.basketball\/en\/events\/fiba-eurobasket-2025\/teams\/slovenia\/196610-luka-doncic\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">averagi<\/a>ng<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a tournament-high 32.8 points along with 8.4 assists and eight rebounds per game. Doncic is also coming off a 37-point performance against Israel Thursday, where he shot 12\/21 from the field (57.1%) and 4\/11 (36.4%) from deep. Vasquez-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><b>Luka\u2019s Offseason Dominance Will Only Help Lakers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doncic\u2019s EuroBasket stint has only helped his preparation for the Lakers\u2019 2025-26 campaign, with the team poised to benefit from his physical transformation and improved two-way skill set. He is also working on his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/08\/21\/lakers-luka-doncic-offseason-development\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">catch-and-shoot game and off-ball movement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, two aspects worth following as Slovenia&#8217;s EuroBasket run continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers\u2019 front office has also championed his summertime play, going great lengths to show their support. Governor Jeanie Buss and President\/GM Rob Pelinka made the trip to Slovenia to watch Doncic and the team\u2019s final practice last week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe just wanted to make a statement to Luka that we support what he does for his country,\u201d <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6579695\/2025\/08\/27\/lakers-jeanie-buss-rob-pelinka-luka-doncic-slovenia-poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelinka told The Athletic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThat\u2019s really important to the Lakers when we have a player that\u2019s the face of our franchise, just to show that support for him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want to let him focus and dedicate to this tournament, EuroBasket, and not distract him in any way,\u201d he added. \u201cWe want him to a hundred percent be able to play for his country with pride, and he\u2019ll turn his attention to the Lakers as soon as this tournament ends, hopefully with them going far and maybe winning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doncic and Slovenia have advanced to the Round of 16, a nod they earned after <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/olympics\/story\/_\/id\/46138347\/doncic-slovenia-israel-france-final-16-eurobasket\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defeating Iceland Tuesday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
