Wendell Carter Jr. \u2013 6\u201910\u201d Power Forward, Duke, 19 Years Old\u00a0<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Wendell Carter Jr.<\/a><\/strong> enters the NBA Draft as a potential top-10 pick. During his one and only season with Duke, Carter made his case to be a lottery pick. The 6\u201910\u201d power forward played 37 games and was a key player, helping Duke reach the Elite Eight. After the team’s loss to Kansas, Carter announced\u00a0he would enter the NBA Draft.<\/p>\n

Carter averaged 13.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in college, shooting 56 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the arc. Alongside Marvin Bagley III<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0Grayson Allen<\/a><\/strong>, Carter was a leading contributor. Named second-team All-ACC in 2018, his play led to him becoming one of this year\u2019s top prospects.<\/p>\n

Strengths<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A strong, powerful player, Carter makes full use of his 260-pound frame. Difficult to move, he can gain good position, finish through contact, draw fouls, and dominate the glass. A skilled big man, he’s surprisingly agile for his size. He has good shooting potential, as he shot over 40 percent from three-point range in college. He also has a good handle for a big guy and could develop an off-the-dribble shot. Carter does the little things well. He shows good awareness\u00a0on the court, plays with good discipline, and has a 7’3” wingspan. Carter really is a do-it-all big man.<\/p>\n

Carter has soft hands, making him valuable in the paint and in the pick-and-roll game. He’s a good target for lobs, which makes him a point guard’s best friend. A good rebounder, Carter is strong at either end.\u00a0He’s a great passer for his position, making quick reads and throwing accurate passes.\u00a0Carter is also an effective interior defender who has the strength to neutralize post players.<\/p>\n

Weaknesses<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Carter is slightly undersized at 6’10” and there are questions about his speed at the next level.\u00a0He can protect the rim but still gets finished over a fair amount. A good passer, but he can struggle in double team situations.\u00a0Not an above-the-rim player, his lack of elite athleticism will put a cap on his upside. Most of his turnovers come off him trying to do too much. Carter needs to slow down and make better decisions. He must get smarter on defense as he bites on pump fakes too often, which will cost him in the NBA.<\/p>\n

NBA Potential<\/strong><\/h2>\n

A versatile player, he’s capable of playing either power forward or center. His well-rounded abilities make him one of the best prospects in this year’s class. Carter will likely be more effective playing center in the NBA due to his lack of quickness. His strong play style and two-way abilities make him a valuable player in today’s NBA. With only minor weaknesses coming in, Carter brings a lot to the table. This should make him a good contributor from day one.<\/p>\n

NBA Player Comparison<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Carter has the strength and shooting potential to become a Kevin Love<\/a><\/strong> or an Al Horford<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>type player. Capable of playing either power forward or center, Carter is versatile enough to make an impact at either spot. However, center looks to be where his future lies. He’s smart, physical, and ready to contribute. Carter is a player who will make any team that passes on him regret its decision.<\/p>\n
