Injuries derailed the\u00a0<\/span>Dallas Mavericks<\/span><\/a>\u00a0last season. Whether it was an injury to the former franchise star\u00a0<\/span>Luka Don\u010di\u0107<\/span><\/a>, or injuries to\u00a0<\/span>Daniel Gafford<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Kyrie Irving<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>or Dereck Lively II.<\/span><\/a> Shortly after\u00a0<\/span>Anthony Davis<\/span><\/a>\u00a0arrived, he too dealt with his own injuries. Considering the injury history of these players (sans Don\u010di\u0107), there is a fair argument to be made that injuries could play the role of antagonist again in the upcoming season. If they did, there shouldn’t be much of a surprise. That being said, to begin the season, at least, the Mavericks (aside from Irving) will hopefully start the season whole. Reportedly, this will include Lively, who is expected to be ready for the start of the Mavericks training camp. Considering that Dallas will rely heavily on their big man rotation this season, Lively’s return is significant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Mavericks Training Camp Expected to Include Recovering Big Man<\/h2>\n

The Mavericks are one of the teams in the NBA<\/a> that must remain healthy throughout the entire season if they are to be a threat in their conference. More specifically, Davis must be healthy. AD’s health is especially important considering that Irving will not return until the back half of the season. Of course, there is the chance he may not return this season at all. For others, their contributions are equally vital, but again, health and availability are the key.<\/p>\n

For Lively, staying healthy is his number one goal. Should he be successful, his role in Dallas could be instrumental, even if it involves coming off the bench. Lively has improved dramatically over his two seasons in the league. His growth has given the Mavericks something explosive in the paint area. He was excelling in his role last season until injuries overcame him, but there is no doubt that when on the floor, Lively’s energy on both ends of the court is consistent and productive.<\/p>\n

Following offseason surgery to his right foot to repair bone spurs, according to\u00a0<\/span>Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal<\/span><\/a>, Lively is on course to return to NBA action in time for the Mavericks’ training camp. The surgery <\/span>was followed<\/span> by a stress fracture in the same foot, which caused some in-house turmoil between team medical personnel. Lively appears to have come out from under all of it, though, which is good news for him and Dallas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where Dallas fits in the West when healthy?<\/h3>\n

With Irving remaining on ice for the foreseeable future, despite a deep team and the draft addition of Cooper Flagg<\/a>, the Mavericks do not have an easy path in the Western Conference<\/a>. A full complement of roster pieces doesn’t necessarily guarantee a top spot in the conference. The hope for the Mavericks is that they come out of the gate competitive and remain that way until Irving returns. Acquiring D’Angelo Russell<\/a> to fill in the gap temporarily was a solid move, but not exactly championship-relevant.<\/p>\n

If the Mavericks can get to a place where they are fully healthy\u2014Davis is again the key in this regard\u2014there is every reason to consider them a threat in the West. However, how they start the season and progress during the first half of it will determine their postseason hopes. In Lively’s case, he is in a great position to continue his rise as a young player in the league. He has clearly found his groove with the Mavericks, and gives them something vitally effective in the second unit.<\/p>\n
