In that time, he’s become one of Miami’s key players, renowned for his perimeter defense. Indeed, among NBA fans, Highsmith is known as “The Locksmith” due to his ability to lock up his man.

Brooklyn has remained active in trade conversations as the league’s only team with remaining significant cap space, and takes Highsmith in with an unprotected second-rounder. Nets have also acquired two 1sts this offseason to add to the most 1st and 2nd round picks in the league. https://t.co/pnjlseX4SN

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) August 15, 2025

<del datetime="2025-08-15T19:05:39+00:00"></del>

For a franchise like the Heat, he seemed like the perfect fit. He helped them maintain their defensive foundation, he took every possession seriously and he had a low-maintenance personality. In fact, Miami had signed Highsmith to a two-year, $10.8 million contract last offseason. Given that he got his foot in Biscayne Bay with a 10-day contract, that was a real vote of confidence.

To be clear, Highsmith does have his flaws. At the offensive end, he’s limited to scoring off of 3s and turnovers. He’s not particularly prolific beyond the arc, topping out at 1.2 3-point conversions per game. However, he’s worked diligently to become more efficient and has made 38.8 percent of his 3s the past two seasons.

Consequently, when he was said to be off-limits ahead of the 2024-25 trade deadline, it tracked. If those rumors were true, it’ll be interesting to find out what made them change their mind though. As it happens so often, it could’ve been a move made with their payroll and future moves in mind. Due to the hype building around the 2026 NBA Draft class, they could have a wishlist of projected second-round prospects.

The Last Word On The Haywood Highsmith Trade

All that can be said for certain is that the Heat didn’t become a better team today.

Mar 25, 2025; Miami, Florida, USA; Golden State Warriors forward Jimmy Butler III (10) dribbles the basketball as Miami Heat forward Haywood Highsmith (24) defends during the first quarter at Kaseya Center. Frankly, he’s arguably their top 3-and-D wing, so he could even become a full-time starter. This probably isn’t a season-long rental either. Because they gave up a draft pick to acquire him, he will more than likely be re-signed when his contract expires next summer.

In a stunning move, the Miami Heat have traded Haywood Highsmith and a 2032 second-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick, per ESPN senior insider Shams Charania.
