Many pointed to specific moments where fouls appeared obvious but went uncalled. Others accused the league of not holding referees to a high enough standard. Numerous posts calling for better officiating trended on X (formerly Twitter), with supporters tagging the league and demanding accountability.

The most controversial moment came after Kelsey Mitchell’s last-second shot bounced off the backboard, sealing the Fever’s narrow defeat. Coaches and players across the league have raised concerns about inconsistency in how games are called. Some believe part of the issue may be structural. Unlike NBA referees, WNBA officials are not full-time employees and are paid per game. Critics argue that this makes it harder to attract and retain the best officiating talent.

Fans of other teams have also expressed similar frustrations about missed calls and inconsistent foul standards. The problem appears to be league-wide, not just something the Fever face.

Players, Coaches Echo Fans’ Frustrations

The complaints about the level of officiating in the game between the Fever and the Wings weren’t limited to the fans. In addition to Clark’s postgame chirping toward officials, Fever guard Sophie Cunningham spoke out after what she felt was favoritism.

Speaking on her “Show Me Something” podcast, Cunningham said Wings guard and 2025 No. 1 pick Paige Bueckers, who scored 16 points on the night, received some favorable calls during the game. Despite acknowledging Bueckers’ talent and potential, Cunningham felt the officiating was inconsistent and suggested it tilted in favor of the Wings.

“I love Paige to death,” Cunningham said. “Do not get me wrong. I think she’s a helluva player and would love to play with her one day. But those refs were giving her every freakin’ whistle last night. Like, you literally couldn’t touch her. That s–t is so annoying to me. And if you’re gonna do that, then give it to our guards. I just hate the inconsistency.”

Fever head coach Stephanie White didn’t hold back in her postgame comments. She argued that if officials were going to allow a physical style of play, it needed to be consistent for both teams. White was seen approaching the officials for clarification on calls and non-calls throughout the game. The veteran coach stated that her main concern was that the Fever weren’t getting the same whistles as their opponents.

© Grace Hollars/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

Indiana Fever fans have made their feelings clear after a frustrating 1-point loss to the Dallas Wings on Tuesday.
