Although Hachimura has made his case to start as a reliable 3-and-D forward, his playing out of position on defense has led to questions over his role next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart would boost a group full of offensive-minded players and give the Lakers some much-needed point-of-attack defense, especially with his ability to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Tim_NBA\/status\/1946683909057511659\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guard multiple positions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That defensive versatility would be critical for a lineup hindered by Doncic and Reaves\u2019 limitations. Additionally, Smart is a decent shot creator and respectable marksman from three. Despite last year\u2019s 39% mark coming on low volume, he can expect the perimeter looks to increase next to James, Doncic and Reaves. In addition to a blistering defense, Smart would add a unique dimension to a first five that has two future Hall-of-Famers and a breakout third star.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lineup change could also benefit the Lakers\u2019 bench as much as their starters, with Hachimura\u2019s scoring likely to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakeshowlife.com\/lakers-may-have-quietly-relegated-rui-hachimura-with-marcus-smart-deal\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jolt a second unit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that ranked 29th in bench points per game.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word on Marcus Smart\u2019s Role with the Lakers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart\u2019s role in LA is contingent on his health, which has negatively affected his play in the last few seasons.
