As the Nets now have 21 players under contract, he faces an uphill battle in his efforts to be on the team&#8217;s roster for the 2025-26 season opener. It&#8217;s also worth mentioning that he&#8217;ll &#8220;miss the upcoming Asia Cup after Team China determined he <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PDChinaSports\/status\/1947478174440563049\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has not yet recovered sufficiently<\/a> to compete,&#8221; per People&#8217;s Daily, China on <em>X<\/em>. &#8220;The 22-year-old suffered a hard fall during the CBA Playoffs in April and was later diagnosed with a fractured lower vertebra.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, Brooklyn&#8217;s depth is weakest at power forward, which is his primary position.<\/p>\n<h2>Nets Start New Tradition With Fanbo Zeng Signing<\/h2>\n<p>The Nets adding a Chinese prospect <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NetsDaily\/status\/1951837290638262710\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">could become tradition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Last August, they gave young wing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cuiyo01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacky Cui<\/a> a chance to make his mark, offering him <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/09\/02\/nets-top-chinese-prospect-yongxi-jacky-cui-inks-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">a two-way contract<\/a>. Just three months after joining Brooklyn he <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2024\/12\/13\/nets-yongxi-cui-acl-injury\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">tore his ACL<\/a> while on assignment with their G League affiliate. Prior to Cui, it had been 14 years since a Chinese player was on the roster; then the <em>New Jersey<\/em> Nets traded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jianlyi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yi Jianlin<\/a> to the Washington Wizards. He&#8217;s not overly explosive and won&#8217;t fool anyone into thinking he&#8217;s New Orleans Pelicans star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willizi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zion Williamson<\/a> or Hall of Fame wing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cartevi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vince Carter<\/a>. He actually moves similarly to Nets teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/portemi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Porter Jr.<\/a>, whose movements have been compromised by back injuries. Nonetheless, at Zeng&#8217;s size, he&#8217;s a potential mismatch weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Too quick for bigs. Too big for guards. To be fair, the level of competition he faced in the CBA isn&#8217;t on the level of what he can expect in the NBA. Still, it&#8217;s certainly a sign of him being in a good rhythm.<\/p>\n<p>The hope now is that it&#8217;ll carry over to training camp and beyond.
