They like him as a backcourt fit next to Steph Curry and have identified Seth Curry, Steph’s brother, as a needed bench shooter with an obvious family tie.”

The Real Splash Brothers Could Be Teaming Up This Season

Seth Curry is an unrestricted free agent. Like his older brother, Seth is an outstanding 3-point shooter. However, for those who don’t know Seth, he is not his brother.

Seth Curry (30) shoots during warm ups before a game against the Boston Celtics at TD Garden. Mandatory Credit: Paul Rutherford-Imagn Images

Seth Curry has been a journeyman throughout his career. Curry, who went undrafted after Duke, has played for nine teams over his 11 NBA seasons. He has spent the last year and a half with the Charlotte Hornets.

While Seth averaged only 6.5 points in 16 minutes of action over 68 contests, he connected on 47.8% of his field goal attempts in the 2024-25 season. He also drained 1.2 threes a contest at a league-best 45.6% clip.

Seth Curry is one of the best shooters in NBA history and, in fact, a better shooter than his older brother, at least percentage-wise. Seth ranks second among active players in three-point percentage at 43.2%, and seventh in league history. Moreover, his 56.2% effective field goal percentage is the 16th best among active players, tops among guards, and 21st all-time.

Meanwhile, Steph Curry is third among active players in three-point shooting at 42.3% and 13th in league history. Similarly, Klay Thompson, along with Steph Curry, is affectionately known as the “Splash Brothers” during their tenure with the Warriors, ranks seventh among active players and 23rd overall at 41.1%.

Warriors Upcoming Decisions

Golden State is the only team not to make a roster move since free agency started. According to NBA cap expert Yossi Gozlan, the Warriors are unlikely to do so until the Jonathan Kuminga situation is resolved. Kuminga, a restricted free agent, and the Warriors are at an impasse on a new contract. It is believed that the two sides will agree, though the Dubs may ultimately trade him.

The Golden State Warriors only have nine players under contract for the 2025-26 season. Granted, the Warriors must add five players to a standard contract, but their most significant issue is that those nine players will incur a salary cap hit of $170.5 million. Thus, leaving the Warriors $17.1 million below the luxury tax and $36.8 million under the second apron. Gui Santos and Trayce Jackson-Davis’ contracts don’t fully guarantee until January 10.

If Kuminga does re-sign with the Warriors, it will significantly impact their plans for other free agents and how much they are willing to pay. The Warriors could go over the second apron, but they are not sure they want to after finally getting out of financial problems.

More problematic is if the Warriors use the taxpayer midlevel exception ($5.7 million), they will be hard-capped at the second apron. Gozlan said if the Warriors and Kuminga agree, the Dubs will likely want to keep his salary between $22 and $23 million. Gozlan continued that keeping Kuminga’s salary in that range would use the MLE and add three more players on minimum contracts.

Warriors Could Have Agreement With Free Agents

The Golden State Warriors are believed to have verbally agreed to deals with Al Horford and Melton, according to Bret Siegel of ClutchPoints. While that isn’t confirmed, if the Warriors do have deals in place with those two players, Slater believes there is a good reason why announcements haven’t been made.

“Part of the potential Al Horford addition would be using the taxpayer mid-level that would second apron [hard] cap them [the Warriors],” Slater said on The Hoops Collective Podcast. “Part of the reason they’re being cautious, and you’ve seen them make zero moves, is because the moment they second apron [hard] cap themselves, they give a team like Utah, a team like Brooklyn — who have stayed out of the Kuminga sweepstakes. And I’m not reporting any interest, the Warriors certainly believe Brooklyn doesn’t have interest — but the moment you give them a dollar amount [that the Warriors can’t match], you can either steal him away or even force the Warriors to have to send off a piece with a pick [to retain him].”

Last Word

Golden State has a lot of work to do. Keeping Kuminga makes the most sense for the Warriors’ present and future in the basketball sense. However, the big issue is cost, and with the Dubs considering themselves title contenders, they have pieces to add to their roster.

Horford makes sense for the Warriors as a replacement for Kevon Looney. Horford is still very productive and would give the Warriors something they haven’t had in years, a reliable floor spacer at the five despite being 39.

Melton and Seth Curry are also extremely interesting options. Melton is versatile, as he is capable of playing all three backcourt spots, and is a quality defender as well as a 3-point shooter. While Melton is still young and can handle the ball, he is coming off a serious knee injury.

The Curry’s joining forces would be fun and give the Warriors a “true Splash brothers.” Seth Curry can handle the ball, is a capable playmaker, and a secondary ballhandler. However, he doesn’t provide much production besides 3-point shooting and is a liability on the defensive end — like his older brother.

Photo Credit: © Darren Yamashita, Imagn Images

Steph Curry and younger brother Seth Curry could be playing together for the first time since their high school days at Charlotte Christian.
