One of those, small forward Justin Champagnie, started 31 games in 2024-25 and is just 24 years old. He didn’t seem like a candidate to be waived. He wasn’t, and instead, it was the other player with a non-guaranteed deal who is the one who will no longer be on the roster.

As first reported by Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Wizards have waived Richaun Holmes. The 31-year-old’s contract was for $13.28 million next season, but only $250K of it was guaranteed. It would have become fully guaranteed if he remained on the roster through January 10, which of course will not be the case.

The Washington Wizards have waived Richaun Holmes. https://t.co/KuoLUfb0Tr

— Michael Scotto (@MikeAScotto) July 14, 2025

A 10-year veteran, Holmes first joined Washington in February of 2024. He was acquired in the deal that netted the Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford. Last season was Holmes’ first full one with the Wizards. Appearing in 31 games (seven starts), the 6-foot-10 center posted averages of 7.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 17.2 minutes. He shot 64.7% from the field and 83.3% (50-60) from the free-throw line.

Prior to the Wizards, Holmes was a member of the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, and Mavericks. He now is looking for his sixth NBA team of his career (or to rejoin one of the teams he previously played for).

Potential Suitors For His Services

Holmes has been a productive player at times in his career. The 2015 second round pick averaged double figures in scoring for three straight seasons with the Kings from 2019-20 until 2021-22. He also grabbed at least seven rebounds per contest in each of those years.

The Boston Celtics could certainly use more proven bodies at the center position. Gone from last season’s team are Kristaps Porzingis, Luke Kornet, and Al Horford (Horford remains unsigned but is not expected to return). The team does roster Neemias Queta, Xavier Tillman Sr., and Luka Garza, but none have shown they can be rotational pieces playing large minutes in the NBA.

Speaking of Horford, it has been widely speculated that he will join the Golden State Warriors. If that falls through though, Holmes could be a fallback option. After a decade with the team, Kevon Looney has moved on, signing with the New Orleans Pelicans. Steve Kerr did not play Trayce Jackson-Davis or Quinten Post huge minutes in the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers were known to be in the center market. They did sign Deandre Ayton after he was waived by the Portland Trail Blazers and re-signed Jaxson Hayes. Still, more could be done at the center position for LA, making Holmes a potential option.

Photo credit: © Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

After the Washington Wizards signed Marvin Bagley III, they had 16 standard contracts, one above the limit.
