Mandatory Credit: Petre Thomas-Imagn Images

Brown brings a résumé few coaches can match. He is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year and owns four championship rings as an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors. That pedigree will matter for a Knicks team hungry to claim its first title in over 50 years.

Mike Brown’s hiring by the Knicks stands out because Brown has always excelled at managing star talent. In Cleveland, he coached LeBron James. In Golden State, he worked under Steve Kerr and helped shape a dynasty. New York believes he can do the same with Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart.

Assembling The Right Staff

New York’s front office did not stop with Brown. The Knicks might add James Borrego as Brown’s lead assistant. Borrego interviewed for the head coaching position and would bring more experience to the bench. Rick Brunson, father of Jalen, is expected to stay on the staff.

Mike Brown’s staff on the Knicks could offer the perfect balance: seasoned voices, player trust, and fresh tactics. Jason Kidd was the original target for president Leon Rose. But the Mavericks refused to let Kidd walk away. Rose then interviewed Taylor Jenkins and Micah Nori before settling on Brown.

Busy Offseason Signals Big Ambitions

While searching for a coach, New York quietly stacked talent. The Knicks landed Jordan Clarkson on a veteran minimum after Utah bought out his contract. That’s incredible valie for the 2020-21 sixth man of the year. They also signed Guerschon Yabusele to a two-year, $12 million deal. Yabusele adds some much needed physicality to the frontcourt. And he shot 38 percent from three for the Sixers and brings needed size off the bench.

Once Mitchell Robinson returned late last season, the Knicks discovered something positive about their double big lineup against the Pacers in the playoffs. Now they have a forward in Yabusele that can play as a small-ball center off the bench. It’s an imteresting option to have in the toolkit. This abundance of options would contrast to last season where the Knicks were dead last in the league in bench points. Now, they have depth. They will use minimu contracts and cap holds to fill the final spots, but the core is set.

Why Brown Arrives At The Perfect Time

Hiring Brown before summer league gives him precious weeks to bond with his players. Training camp won’t feel like day one. Instead, Brown can test rotations, assess his l guys, and fine-tune a system built around defense and spacing.

The Knicks hiring Mike Brown makes sense for a franchise that believes it has a real shot in the East. With Bridges likely to re-sign, the Knicks will exceed the second tax apron. That signals they want to win now, not later.

Clear Path To The Top

New York suddenly owns the deepest roster in the conference. Brunson continues to play like a top-five guard. Bridges delivers elite defense and versatility though inconsistent. Towns, more consistent, gives the team another All-NBA presence.

Add Brown’s experience to this mix, and the Knicks should expect nothing less than a return to the conference finals — and beyond. The East remains wide open. The Hawks, Magic and Pistons are emerging. Boston, Milwaukee, and Pacers all have question marks. The Knicks, with Brown at the helm, have answers.

A Championship Or Bust Mentality

Fans in Madison Square Garden demand a title. His arrival means they are the best position they have probably ever been since their 1973 title. Mike Brown’s tenure will be built on the excellent foundation that Thibodeau built in his five-year tenure on the Knicks.

Credit:© John Jones-Imagn Images

NEW YORK – The New York Knicks have found their new leader.
