The Portland Trail Blazers <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/45612548\/sources-blazers-ayton-become-free-agent-buyout\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bought out Ayton\u2019s contract<\/a> Sunday, jolting the free agency market hours before it opened. While the Lakers\u2019 status shifted in recent days, Stein confirmed <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TheSteinLine\/status\/1940511959021244523\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ayton\u2019s commitment to LA<\/a> around 1:45 p.m. PT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cherry on top? Ayton\u2019s agent is Bill Duffy, who also represents his new teammate: <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Land Slam Dunk in Former No. 1 Overall Pick<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Ayton a Near-Perfect Fit for the Lakers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayton, who found his way to Portland after a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/gophnx.com\/deandre-ayton-legacy-most-polarizing-phoenix-suns\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bitter breakup with the Phoenix Suns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, showcased his talents for a rebuilding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/06\/30\/trail-blazers-commit-to-clingan-and-yang-after-ayton-buyout\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blazers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> squad over the last two years. This season, despite only playing 40 games, he averaged 14.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.0 block per game. He also shot 56% from the field, 19% from three (6\/32) and 67% from the charity stripe.
