While the front office and fans wait for decisions on their stars, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reaveau01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Reaves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has officially made his future plans known.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Fans Shouldn\u2019t Worry Over Guard\u2019s $89.2M Decision<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Reaves Declines Four-Year Extension<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaves formally declined a four-year, $89.2 million extension Wednesday, according to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6453010\/2025\/06\/26\/lakers-austin-reaves-contract-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Athletic\u2019s Dan Woike<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead, Reaves will play out the third season of a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10080982-austin-reaves-lakers-reportedly-agree-to-4-year-56m-contract-in-nba-free-agency\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four-year max contract<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Reaves\u2019 decision, Woike says fans shouldn\u2019t stress over potentially losing the 27-year-old phenom to free agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe decision, league sources said, wasn\u2019t a reflection of Reaves and the Lakers\u2019 relationship. Instead, it\u2019s almost a foregone conclusion considering the limitations placed on the amount the Lakers were allowed to offer this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaves\u2019 upcoming potential free agency meant his name was floating in and out of rumors on the first day of the NBA Draft. The Lakers have never shown interest in trading Reaves and continue to hold him in high value.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The undrafted guard from Arkansas is generating well-deserved buzz after the best season of his career. Reaves put up 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists on .460\/.377\/.877 splits this year and is still viewed positively despite a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2025\/5\/29\/24439257\/austin-reaves-lakers-playoffs-film-breakdown-season-review-injury\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poor playoff performance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This decision allows him to enter unrestricted free agency next summer, where he could reportedly command <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/25198475-how-la-lakers-are-trying-fix-biggest-roster-weakness\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to $30 million per year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And if there was any worry of Reaves bolting in free agency, he\u2019s made his position clear time and time again: he wants to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/06\/16\/austin-reaves-goal-retire-with-lakers\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stay a Laker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>New Lakers Ownership Should Ease Concerns on Reaves<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The news around Reaves came amid comments from Jeanie Buss and Mark Walter surrounding the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/06\/18\/lakers-buss-family-sale\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ownership change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/45540022\/the-lakers-run-real-business-league-wide-reaction-stunning-buss-family-sale\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who is also a majority owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, is <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6436815\/2025\/06\/19\/mark-walter-owner-lakers-dodgers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no stranger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to extravagant spending in the pursuit of excellence. As such, many expect he\u2019ll bring those same financial habits to keep the Lakers in contention. The Lakers have had to make tough decisions on <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/article\/magic-johnson-claims-warned-lakers-214808146.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their own free agents<\/span><\/a>. However,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that shouldn\u2019t be the case with Walter going forward. While keeping Reaves, Doncic, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the books is not an easy task, it&#8217;s one that Walter must be willing to take. Paying a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nba\/tax\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hefty luxury tax bill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hasn\u2019t worked out for every team, but it might do wonders for LA if all goes according to plan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaves bypassing an extension could lead him toward a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2025\/5\/29\/24427833\/austin-reaves-lakers-contract-extension-nba-free-agency-offseason\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five-year, $246.7 million max deal next summer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Depending on how next season plays out, a contract like that could be a worthy investment or a remarkable overpay. Still, Reaves has proven his value to the Lakers\u2019 front office and fans.
