With that search still alive and well, new reporting indicates they could circle back on a rival\u2019s young center.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Report: Past Lakers Trade Target Resurfaces Under New Leadership<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Jazz Could Hold Fire Sale Led by Austin Ainge<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only one week into <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nba\/story\/_\/id\/45434542\/jazz-hire-celtics-austin-ainge-president-basketball-ops\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Ainge\u2019s tenure as Jazz president<\/a>, reports suggest that core players aren\u2019t safe. On Friday, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/06\/07\/utah-jazz-nba-draft-options\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sarah Todd of Deseret News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said some expiring contracts and young players may be placed on the trading block, including breakout big man <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kesslwa01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker Kessler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/06\/09\/jazz-lauri-markkanen-may-be-available-trade-bill-simmons\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">franchise star<\/span><\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/markkla01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauri Markkanen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numerous league sources have indicated that they believe the Jazz are going to be active over the next several weeks. Mandatory Credit: Chris Nicoll-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kessler, who averaged 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game this season, was <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NBA_NewYork\/status\/1896397114277757433\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coveted by the Lakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as early as January, when LA reportedly tried and failed to meet a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/pickuphoop\/status\/1882503118111601073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high asking price set by Jazz CEO Danny Ainge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Following the Feb. 6 trade deadline, Kessler continued to excel, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=walker+kessler+stats+since+feb.+6%2C+2025\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">putting up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 13.3 points, 11.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks on 57% shooting from the field. The 23-year-old remains on a rookie scale contract, set to earn $2.9 million and $4.6 million over the next two seasons, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Could the Lakers Re-Enter Talks for Walker Kessler?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The intel regarding the Jazz\u2019s future plans may offer some hope for the Lakers as well, with Kessler seemingly back on the table near the NBA Draft and free agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February, Bleacher Report\u2019s Eric Pincus noted that <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10153024-a-4-team-blockbuster-to-shake-up-the-2025-nba-trade-deadline\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Jazz\u2019s asking price for Kessler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pre-Doncic trade) was <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/knechda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dalton Knecht<\/a> and LA\u2019s 2029 and 2031 first-round picks. With the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/lakers-trade-rumors-asking-price-for-jazzs-walker-kessler-is-dalton-knecht-two-first-round-picks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2029 first since off to Dallas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Lakers could come up with a similar proposal and take a second bite at the apple this summer. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/news\/lakers-trade-for-hornets-center-mark-williams\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such a deal had nearly worked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willima07.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Williams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Charlotte Hornets, so pivoting back to Utah should not be much of an issue. Throw in Austin Ainge\u2019s willingness for change and the Lakers\u2019 dire needs for a center, and it seems logical for the two sides to touch base again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lakers lacked an athletic and physical big man next to Doncic and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WPczSpgzUlE\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kessler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has shown he can check those boxes as an elite rim runner and protector. Aside from wreaking havoc in the paint, the 7-footer has also <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EricSpyroNBA\/status\/1867763037983354906\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extended his range<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, albeit briefly. He tallied career-highs in threes made (six) and attempted (34) for a percentage of 17.6%. While the three ball isn\u2019t an essential part of his game, it\u2019s nice to know he has that in his arsenal. It would likely boost his favorability with head coach JJ Redick, who was a skilled marksman in his own right during his 15-year playing career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kessler remains an ideal trade candidate for the Lakers.
