Following the blockbuster that never was, he eventually suited up for the crosstown rival Clippers, pioneering the \u201cLob City\u201d era before journeying around the Western Conference for the last eight years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, as Paul gears up for free agency ahead of his age-40 season, there\u2019s a chance he could don the purple and gold after all.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Could 12x All-Star Finally End Up a Laker?<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>CP3 Wants to Retire in LA<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While appearing on <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/HsMlqngIfhM\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Pat McAfee Show\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thursday, Paul addressed his looming decision, noting how his family plays an important role in his future plans, with his goal to retire in Los Angeles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8221;I talked to my family about it,\u201d <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ArashMarkazi\/status\/1930684818439958848\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMy son is 16. My daughter is 12. The past six seasons I have lived without them. I&#8217;ve been away from them the last six years. That&#8217;s the conversation.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul also confirmed that his body feels \u201cgood\u201d ahead of next season, but that he doesn\u2019t want to play for much longer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting all 82 games for the Spurs, Paul averaged 8.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 7.4 assists on .427\/.377\/.924 splits. Although his scoring was inconsistent, Paul proved he can still facilitate at a high level and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/trey-murphy-iii-had-a-hilariously-direct-request-while-being-guarded-by-chris-paul\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">play very solid defense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With the decorated veteran entering <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.poundingtherock.com\/2025\/5\/8\/24425980\/2024-25-san-antonio-spurs-player-reviews-chris-paul-cp3-nba-playoffs-draft-lottery-wembanyama#:~:text=Paul%20is%20an%20unrestricted%20free,with%20the%20Spurs%20last%20season.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unrestricted free agency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, several contenders (the Lakers included) would likely want to add a proven guard to their roster.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Paul Has Laker Connections<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul\u2019s friendship with Lakers star <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been well-documented over the years. Aside from facing each other countless times, the two were also gold medalists on the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.olympics.com\/en\/news\/usa-beijing-2008-redeem-team-naismith-basketball-hall-of-fame\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2008 Redeem Team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/as-lebron-james-makes-his-olympics-return-heres-everything-you-need-to-know-about-his-team-usa-career-214035030.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2012 London Olympics squad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But James isn\u2019t the only Laker Paul is close to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CP3 was teammates with JJ Redick on the Clippers from 2013 to 2017, and the two have formed a bond beyond basketball since then. With his desire to sunset his career in LA and the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/06\/02\/analyzing-fits-of-11-potential-targets-for-lakers-to-fill-their-most-glearing-need\/\" target=\"_self\">Lakers<\/a> needing some bench help, it would seem like a relatively natural fit if other factors align.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul would provide steady facilitating and excel next to LA\u2019s scorers, not to mention his own ability to get buckets from anywhere, especially in the midrange. His ability to stop the ball would also be key for the team\u2019s second unit, which posted a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/teams\/advanced?PlayerPosition=G&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;StarterBench=Bench&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=DEF_RATING\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defensive rating of 29.1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among its guards in the regular season (12th in the NBA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the Lakers may not exactly need CP3 if they still believe in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. LA\u2019s backup point guard recovered from knee surgery and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2025\/5\/23\/24434607\/gabe-vincent-lakers-season-review-offense-trade\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made decent contributions in the rotation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this year. Still, he may not be the answer going forward. If the Lakers part ways with Vincent\u2014as some expect them to do given his expiring contract\u2014that could open the door for them to at least consider Paul, who would be a worthy addition on a veteran minimum deal.
