The 40-year-old was an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season. Previous to that, Ott was an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets.

Booker is certainly used to seeing his team hire a new coach. This will be Phoenix’s fourth head coach of the last four seasons.

Since Booker’s rookie season of 2015-16, here have been the non-interim head coaches he has had:

Jeff Hornacek

Earl Watson

Igor Kokoskov

Monty Williams

Frank Vogel

Mike Budenholzer

Now, barring a surprise Booker trade, Ott can be named to this list. Not included here is Jay Triano, who was Booker’s coach for nearly a full season. While he coached 79 games in 2017-18 after Watson was canned, Triano was there on an interim basis.

Williams helped guide the Suns to the NBA Finals in 2021. He lasted just two seasons after that. Both Vogel (with Lakers in 2020) and Budenholzer (with Bucks in 2021) were championship-winning head coaches. Both were hired by Phoenix, and both were fired after just one season.

Suns Likely Dealing With Different Roster Next Season

Ott may be the coach of a significantly-changed Suns roster come next season. Kevin Durant is widely speculated to be traded in the offseason. Phoenix would certainly move Bradley Beal if they could find a taker, and he agrees to waive his no-trade clause. They would love to find a rotational piece with the 29th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

While the Suns are expected to make moves, one that very few anticipate will happen is trading Booker. The 6-foot-6 guard has been the face of the franchise soon after being selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. In February, he became the Suns all-time leading scorer, surpassing Walter Davis. Booker has three years left on his deal for around $171.2 million.

Meanwhile, Ott should receive more leeway than the previous two Suns coaches due to what should be lower expectations. Early in his career though, Booker played on some bad Phoenix teams, and he could get frustrated if next season gets off to a rough start.
