Among those trying to enter the fray is a born-and-bred New Yorker with some notable Laker ties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Former Lakers Champion Vying for Coveted Coaching Job<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Metta Sandiford-Artest Campaigning for Knicks Gig<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a series of posts not long after Thibodeau\u2019s departure, New York native, 2010 NBA champion, and former Laker <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/artesro01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metta Sandiford-Artest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pushed for consideration of the Knicks opening. It began with a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MettaWorld37\/status\/1930126878817562955\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuesday evening post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that read in part, \u201cAnd now It\u2019s time. NYC bred time.\u201d Artest continued to put himself out there as a viable candidate, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MettaWorld37\/status\/1929981856088502526\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touting his New York roots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MettaWorld37\/status\/1930294066249642389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campaign that&#8217;s over 12 hours strong<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Exactly.  <a  href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/since1999?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#since1999<\/a> <br \/>Not only fan, not only a real nyc street kid, but an nyc winner. In 991 career games, he averaged 13.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists on .414\/.339\/.715 splits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three years ago, Sandiford-Artest expressed a desire to coach at the NBA level, but noted that he wouldn\u2019t force the opportunity. In a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sny.tv\/articles\/metta-ron-artest-knicks-nets-become-nba-coach\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Q&amp;A with SNY\u2019s Ian Begley<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he said:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m definitely trying to be a head coach one day in the NBA. I&#8217;m not really forcing it. I do have a couple people reaching out to different teams. But one day, I would love to be a head coach in the NBA. I still got a lot of unfinished business in terms of winning. Because of how I got suspended, I missed out on All-Star Games, I missed out on All-Defensive First Teams, I missed out on more championships. So I\u2019m still motivated. &#8230; I&#8217;m just as motivated as I was when I was a 15-year-old kid in the streets. One day I do wanna win a title as an NBA head coach. That&#8217;s my intentions.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>Metta Aiming to Continue Player-Turned-Coach Pipeline<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/lakers-news-metta-sandiford-artest-maintains-desire-to-be-nba-head-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandiford-Artest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is boldly attempting to add his name to a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.yardbarker.com\/nba\/articles\/a_brief_history_of_player_turned_coaches_in_the_nba\/s1_13132_40512979\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unique list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: former players who began coaching with little, if any, experience. Three other former Lakers soon became first-time head coaches (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nashst01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steve Nash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fishede01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Derek Fisher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magic Johnson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and their stints were relatively brief. Apart from playing in the same era (early 2000s\/2010s), holding extensive knowledge of the game, and co-founding sports-focused ventures (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/threefourtwo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Redick in podcasting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/onsi\/ball-around\/news\/former-nba-all-star-metta-sandiford-artest-joins-100m-fund-to-advance-sports-technology-ak1987#:~:text=Smart%20Player:%20No-,Former%20NBA%20All%2DStar%20Metta%20Sandiford%2DArtest%20Joins%20$100M,in%20on%20this%20new%20venture.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandiford-Artest in technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Metta has been more present on social media than in broadcast media, and, unlike Redick, he\u2019s advocating to lead a team he once played for. He also has one thing going for him that Redick didn\u2019t have before being hired by the Lakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metta had just one stint on the sidelines after he hung up his jersey: as a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/lakers-news-metta-world-peace-lobbies-for-knicks-head-coaching-job\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">player development coach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with LA\u2019s G League affiliate for the 2017-18 season. In that sense, he\u2019s familiar with coaching responsibilities in the league and has the passion and hometown roots that would help him in New York.
