The Thunder trio has been a sensational part of that success with the way they have dominated the 2025 NBA Playoffs.

The OKC big three have been special in the Western Conference Finals, but will they be able to push the Thunder past the Timberwolves?

OKC Big Three: The Key to Beating the Timberwolves

Feb 5, 2025; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA; Oklahoma City Thunder guard Cason Wallace (22), guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (2), forward Chet Holmgren (7) and forward Jalen Williams (8) watch the game against the Phoenix Suns from the bench during the fourth quarter of a game at Paycom Center. Mandatory Credit: Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images

As far as the team is stacking on both ends of the floor, the three stars are the pillar that keeps them together. The OKC trio of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren continues to be special. The defensive prowess is just stunning, and the offensive dominance shines as they grow together. It has been quite a while since OKC had this promising level of two-way success. Now they are reaping the benefits of it.

New Era of Star Power for OKC

The three put up a combined total of 86 points, 17 rebounds, and 15 assists on 55.2% shooting in Game 2. At this time, it seems everything is falling into place for the Thunder trio. From the days when OKC had Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden (or Serge Ibaka), this is a new high for the Thunder. All things considered, this is the new era of star power that Oklahoma City needs to win.

Back then, many critics were pointing out that the former OKC big three could not share the ball well. We have seen how Durant, Westbrook, and Harden often took turns scoring on iso plays. But they couldn’t blend together better than the current trio they are running the game with.

Tuff 😮‍💨 pic.twitter.com/6m5igjdryn

— OKC THUNDER (@okcthunder) May 23, 2025

Today’s Thunder trio, however, have been far different from the norm for the team back then. SGA could dictate the play, and either Chet or J-Dub would be the beneficiary. If both options don’t work or other shooters can’t find space, the 2025 NBA MVP could simply score it himself.

This has been the massive difference for OKC so far, and the Thunder trio looked more in sync than ever. With the Western Conference Finals heading to Minnesota for the next two games, they will have to brace and lead Oklahoma City to at least steal one game on the road.

SGA and the High-Powered Consistency Game

The Thunder’s main star is making a daring stretch when it mattered most. From scoring the ball, creating opportunities, and forcing defensive stops – the MVP is doing it all. As the spearhead of the OKC big three, SGA is showing that he could indeed be the next face of the NBA as well.

If there was any doubt about his level of play, let the last five games tell you otherwise about how he leads the Thunder trio.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander over his last 5 games:

38 PTS – 3 REB – 8 AST
31 PTS – 5 REB – 9 AST
35 PTS – 3 REB – 4 AST
32 PTS – 6 AST – 69% FG
31 PTS – 6 REB – 7 AST

Appreciate greatness 🔥

(Via @realapp_ ) pic.twitter.com/3fGn59EVC8

— NBACentral (@TheDunkCentral) May 23, 2025

It is no secret that SGA is working his way to a promising level of play. His strong sequences in the first two games of the WCF says a lot about his winning mindset. His masterful performances have been fun to watch, and the way he thrives also instills confidence for the other guys of the OKC trio.

J-Dub’s Redemption Tour

Since that bounce-back performance in Game 7 versus Denver, Williams has stabilized well. J-Dub has been turning on the afterburners on almost every single possession and has been finding ways to thrive. In two victories for OKC, Williams is hustling hard and is grinding to help them win big.

The Thunder are living off his energy, and so does the crowd at home. Minnesota tried to breathe some life late in Game 2, but J-Dub was there to keep them afloat. Hustle plays and strong finishes, this is what Williams continues to do – the gift that keeps on giving.

HUGE PLAY FROM JALEN WILLIAMS!

Steal on one end.
OREB and the and-1 on the other.

MIN-OKC | 4Q | WCF Game 2 | ESPN pic.twitter.com/OBwOdhoHBb

— NBA (@NBA) May 23, 2025

So far, Williams has amassed 45 points, 18 rebounds, and 10 assists in his first two games. That is a good sign considering his struggles against Denver. If you are not impressed, he has still yet to turn the ball over – against a highly defensive-minded Minnesota squad.

Chet Striking Like Lightning

A lot of critics were claiming that Holmgren would be struggling to find the basket in this series. While Minnesota bigs have struggled to find their form, Chet has been thriving. Ever since his inconsistencies have ended, Holmgren has been extra-aggressive in the playoffs.

He has been hunting mismatches, exploiting the Minnesota zone, and even cooking up open looks of his own. Holmgren is criticized for staying behind the arc, but he’s answered that with a strong presence in the paint. A lot of people continue to be surprised with the seven-foot big run the break and cap it off with a monster slam.

CHET HOLMGREN MY GOODNESS. 🔥🔥

pic.twitter.com/ZaExNhe5YM

— Hoop Central (@TheHoopCentral) May 23, 2025

Despite his frame, Chet offers a lot of strength in the paint for OKC. The fact that he can shoot the ball and space the floor is another facet to his game. His consistent game is showing up for OKC, and he may well be a great second option for the Thunder too.

Can This OKC Big Three Win it All?

The Western Conference Finals is turning into a one-sided affair in the Thunder’s favor. It is no secret that the Thunder trio is starting to chart its path to bigger glory. With just two more wins to punch a ticket to the NBA Finals, this is looking like a great chance for the young stars to shine bright.

There were initial doubts on OKC’s chances.
