That list just grew with reporting from ESPN\u2019s Dave McMenamin, who confirmed their interest in a young center who is familiar with the City of Angels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Report: Lakers Interested in Hawks Center with LA Ties<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Lakers Tied to Onyeka Okongwu<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McMenamin appeared on <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/straight-fire-knicks-choke-away-game-1-haliburton-hits\/id1523353907?i=1000709403459\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStraight Fire with Jason McIntyre\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Thursday and said the Lakers have had interest in Hawks center <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/okongon01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onyeka Okongwu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since before the trade deadline. He noted the Lakers called the Hawks between their deal for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the since-rescinded trade for Hornets center <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willima07.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Williams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the Mark Williams trade, and I can\u2019t tell you all the names on that list but I actually assume he was one of the names on the list that Rob Pelinka presented to Luka because I do know the Lakers made a call to the Hawks around the trade deadline about Okongwu,\u201d <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/lakersnation.com\/lakers-rumors-buzz-surrounding-interest-in-hawks-onyeka-okongwu\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McMenamin said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McMenamin also cautioned against trading for Nets center <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/claxtni01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nic Claxton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who was one of the earliest names connected to LA but is making $25 million next season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okongwu grew up in Chino, Calif., attended Chino Hills High School with the Ball brothers, and spent his lone collegiate season with the USC Trojans. The sixth overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, he averaged 13.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game on .567\/.324\/.759 splits this season. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask?q=onyeka+okongwu+stats+as+a+starter+2024-25\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since entering the starting lineup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Jan. 20, Okongwu averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He is a perfect lob threat for Doncic and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, having already experienced <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JacksonLloydNBA\/status\/1911997632358015340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stellar playmaking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngtr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trae Young<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He has also been an <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/stats\/players\/roll-man?sort=POSS&amp;dir=1&amp;SeasonType=Regular+Season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efficient roller<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in general, scoring on 64% of his pick-and-roll opportunities and ranking in the 82nd percentile. And he was able to hold his own on defense despite his undersized frame, posting the <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.statmuse.com\/nba\/ask\/best-defensive-rating-hawks-players\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourth-best defensive rating on the Hawks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (113.7) and tallying <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/okongon01\/gamelog\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven games with three or more blocks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With the Lakers searching for young bigs who can thrive on both ends, Okongwu checks those boxes with hometown ties to boot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hawks big man just finished the first of a four-year, $62 million contract and will earn $15 million next season. If the Lakers were to re-engage in trade talks, a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nba\/lakers\/news\/lakers-likely-trade-package-for-center-upgrade-revealed\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potential framework<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could include one of LA\u2019s expiring contracts\u2014<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hachiru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rui Hachimura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($18.2M), <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vincega01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabe Vincent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($11.5M), or <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/klebima01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maxi Kleber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ($11M)\u2014plus adequate draft capital and, if need be, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/k\/knechda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dalton Knecht<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okongwu has proven he can step in as a starter and make a meaningful impact for a team with playoff aspirations, even if the Hawks fell short this season.
