Never has The Joker indicated he would want to leave Denver, not after last season&#8217;s disappointing end or this season&#8217;s similar end. Joki\u0107 is the standard in Denver, and will be the No.1 option <em>until<\/em> he decides to leave for either another NBA team, or his horses back home, permanently. There might be more concerning questions surrounding the Nuggets&#8217; No.2 option:\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/m\/murraja01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jamal Murray<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The former champion was instrumental in Denver&#8217;s title run two seasons ago, but was not in similar form either last year or this year. Murray is under the microscope following an especially underperforming second-round series against the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/05\/20\/5-thunder-draft-prospects\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oklahoma City Thunder<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0that ended Denver&#8217;s postseason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Jamal Murray&#8217;s No.2 Option Status with Nuggets Cause for Concern<\/h2>\n<h3>ESPN&#8217;s Brian Windhorst points to Denver Nuggets&#8217; depth issues; Jamal Murray&#8217;s future beside Nikola Joki\u0107<\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Is Murray a legitimate second star? He&#8217;s certainly been a star <em>at times<\/em> over the years. He was a star when Denver won their franchise&#8217;s first title in 2023. He has the ability to play as a star\u2014the talent, gifting, skillset\u2014and isn&#8217;t shy of clutch moments in important playoff games. However, the combination of injuries and inconsistencies in the regular and postseason means Murray can&#8217;t always be counted on. You could argue that Denver should have two rings at this point. You could also argue that they don&#8217;t, due to Murray. Now, not all of Denver&#8217;s shortcomings since their title run are upon Murray&#8217;s shoulders. The\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/05\/19\/russell-westbrook-denver-nuggets-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nuggets have had depth issues<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0ever since they let\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownbr01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bruce Brown<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caldwke01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kentavious Caldwell-Pope walk<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> out the door.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Joki\u0107, as phenomenal as he is, can&#8217;t win titles alone. It&#8217;s not usual for a big man to carry a team <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that way.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/o\/onealsh01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Shaquille O&#8217;Neal<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0couldn&#8217;t do it,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duncati01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tim Duncan<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0couldn&#8217;t do it, and even\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abdulka01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kareem Abdul-Jabbar<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0couldn&#8217;t. He had\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnsma02.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Magic Johnson<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0alongside him for five of his six titles, and one with\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roberos01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oscar Robinson<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. For one title, Joki\u0107 had Murray, but he hasn&#8217;t had that same version of Murray since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Whether the Nuggets would ever contemplate trading Murray for an upgraded version to pair with Joki\u0107 is unlikely at this point. However, more questions than answers surround Murray, and his last playoff outing didn&#8217;t help his case. That said, Denver has more issues than Murray, and NBA insider Brian Windhorst adds depth to those issues.<\/p>\n<h3>Fixing a much needed flaw<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oIhEd8UKg_k\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Windhorst, who recently appeared on the\u00a0<\/span><\/a><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oIhEd8UKg_k\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dan Patrick Show<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to discuss the Nuggets, Denver has roster flaws that became evident during the regular season. Regarding depth, Denver barley has it. Unfortunately,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/p\/portemi01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Michael Porter Jr. <\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">dealt<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with a shoulder injury for much of the playoff run.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/w\/westbru01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Russell Westbrook<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0was unreliable as well. Denver&#8217;s depth issues have contributed to their early playoff exits in the last two seasons. What the Nuggets do over the summer in that regard will be something to keep an eye on.
