In his latest mock following the NBA Draft Combine, <\/span>Bleacher Report\u2019s Jonathan Wasserman<\/span><\/a> projected the Lakers to land a decorated veteran forward in the second round: Villanova\u2019s scoring ace, <\/span>Eric Dixon<\/span><\/a>. He may have the size and scoring potential the Lakers want, but does that pick make sense at no. 55?<\/span><\/p>\n

Draft Analyst Predicts Lakers Land NCAA Scoring Leader<\/b><\/h2>\n

Background<\/b><\/h3>\n

A three-time All-Big East selection, the fifth-year Dixon boasts a plethora of accolades, particularly in his final season. The 6\u20198\u201d forward <\/span>led the NCAA in scoring with 23.3 points<\/span><\/a>, along with 5.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 0.8 steals on .451\/.407\/.813 splits. Dixon also became the <\/span>Wildcats\u2019 all-time leading scorer<\/span><\/a>, finishing with 2,314 career points in 162 games, and earned All-American third-team nods from the <\/span>Associated Press<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>United States Basketball Writers Association<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At 6\u20198\u201d and 265 pounds, Dixon is a bruising power forward who can put the ball in the basket at all three levels. He\u2019s somewhat mobile despite his strong frame and has a knack for scoring on drives and post-ups. While a majority of his looks came at the rim, Dixon also expanded his shooting range over time, attempting 42% of his shots from deep in his final season. Scouting reports praise Dixon\u2019s <\/span>\u201cfundamentally sound\u201d game<\/span><\/a> and ability to <\/span>do the \u201cdirty work.\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

However, there are several <\/span>concerns<\/span><\/a> over Dixon\u2019s defensive versatility and athleticism, both coming from a lack of agility. Taking care of the ball is another area of growth for Dixon, as he holds career averages of 1.5 turnovers to 1.4 assists.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an <\/span>interview<\/span><\/a> with HoopsHype\u2019s Cyro Asseo, Dixon said he brings \u201c<\/span>intelligence, toughness, and the ability to connect on both sides of the floor\u201d from day one.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne thing that stands out is my screening ability and my knack for helping teammates get open,\u201d he added, noting defenders had to \u201crespect\u201d his shot-making abilities as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for the upcoming defensive challenges, Dixon said he\u2019s worked on switching \u201cconstantly\u201d at Villanova and is \u201ccomfortable guarding all positions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>My body type and the way I think about the game allow me to do that,\u201d he added. \u201cGuarding threes, fours, and fives isn\u2019t new to me. I\u2019m excited for the challenge and to go up against the best in the world. I\u2019m ready to step up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
