After a subpar postseason and speculation over his future, a new report from the LA Times says the 26-year-old guard is safe\u2014though not completely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Lakers Unlikely to Move On From Beloved Young Star, Per Insider<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>Dan Woike: Reaves is Not \u201cUntradeable\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.silverscreenandroll.com\/2025\/5\/15\/24430956\/lakers-rumors-austin-reaves-untradedeable-contract-nba-offseason\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thursday newsletter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Lakers beat writer Dan Woike put the rising rumors to rest: the Lakers still believe in Reaves and are unlikely to trade the undrafted phenom.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne, the Lakers and the most important people in the organization all love Reaves and his journey from undrafted free agent to a talent that people think is All-Star caliber. And, at just $14 million next season, he\u2019ll be one of the most productive players in the league per dollar minus some superstars on the very early stages of their rookie deals.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTwo, he\u2019s not viewed as \u2018untradeable\u2019 because almost no one in the NBA is untradeable. But if the Lakers are going to trade him for a center, they\u2019re going to want one that is foundationally important \u2014 a build-around type and not a fill-in toward the obvious need they have at center (and will need to address in other ways).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one of the best centers in the NBA were available, the conversations might be different, but at least now, during the first part of the offseason, that just isn\u2019t the case.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rumors came not long after Reaves posted averages of 16.2 points (.411\/.319\/.857 splits), 5.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists in LA\u2019s first-round loss to the Timberwolves. On May 11, Woike\u2019s colleague, Times columnist Bill Plaschke, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/latimessports\/status\/1921981254888558889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a \u201cpainful truth\u201d that the Lakers should trade Reaves. Adding fuel to the fire, The Ringer\u2019s Bill Simmons even predicted LA would deal him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When Reaves gets traded this summer \u2014 and he WILL get traded &#8211; the stuff they [Lakers] get back for him is gonna make it seem worse that they [Mavericks] didn&#8217;t get him in the trade,\u201d <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RTNBA\/status\/1921931227704987962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simmons said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Lakers Cannot Afford Another Mistake with Reaves<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a crucial offseason for the Lakers (a phrase repeated ad nauseam but especially relevant now), they must do everything possible to ensure Reaves stays in the purple and gold. As Woike mentioned, he\u2019s still on a team-friendly contract and becomes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/05\/08\/six-lakers-eligible-for-extensions-this-summer\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eligible for a four-year, $89.2 million extension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> later this summer\u2014an absolute steal of a deal, just like he was when they first signed him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reaves is coming off the best season of his career (20.2 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 5.8 APG on 61% TS), a time in which he showcased excellent adaptability throughout the season. He became a primary ball handler once <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/r\/russeda01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D\u2019Angelo Russell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was traded. And once the Lakers got <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/d\/doncilu01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luka Doncic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Reaves steadied the offense with his scoring and playmaking. On the cusp of his prime at 26, he is the perfect complement for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jamesle01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LeBron James<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Doncic and the ideal bridge between the present and future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The front office has already learned what happens when you give up on young talent. They traded <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/z\/zubaciv01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ivica Zubac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to their crosstown rival in 2019. He had the best season of his career for the Clippers and just completed a double-double playoff run (17 PPG, 10 RPG). They let <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carusal01.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Caruso<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> walk in free agency two years later. He earned two All-Defensive Team selections with the Bulls and now comes off the bench for the league-leading <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/basketball\/2025\/05\/15\/thunder-lose-draft-lottery-whats-next\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thunder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, it\u2019s imperative Reaves sticks around for a while. One bad series should not define him, and he has shown his value to the franchise time and again. The best way the Lakers can reward Reaves\u2019 loyalty is by putting pen to paper on an extension, and seeing that he grows into the All-Star (and hopefully NBA champion) they know he can be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a9 Gary A.
